JOB SUMMARY
Provides for instruction of students by developing, selecting, and modifying instructional plans and materials and presenting them using instructional techniques which meet the needs of all students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students. Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings and activities. Monitors and evaluates student performance. Develops and implements plans to improve student performance. Maintains required records and follows required procedures and practices. Designs and delivers classroom instruction aligned with and based on the Magnet Program pedagogical philosophies. Secondary Magnet Programs in AACPS can include: a) Centers for Applied Technology Programs, b) International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programmes, Extended Learning Programmes, Career-related Programme, and Diploma Programmes, c) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) High School Programs (including the BioMedical Allied Health Program), and d) Apex Arts Programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings and special committees, and provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals, objectives and methods, including establishing clear goals and objectives related to the School Improvement Plan.
  • Evaluates student progress using appropriate assessment techniques such as: prepare, administer and correct evaluations and assessments, and records results and reflectively plans and prepares lessons, assignments, and instructional materials incorporating learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, assessment results, curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development.
  • Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Selects and uses appropriate instructional strategies including, but not limited to, lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, modeling and multi-media teaching aids to present subject matter to students thereby creating a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Counsels pupils when academic and adjustment problems arise and confers with parents and students regarding progress/problems of assigned students; arranges and participates in teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences as necessary. Records meeting minutes on Magnet Tracking System.
  • Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, textbooks, materials and facilities and maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, Board Policy and Administrative Regulation.
  • Improves skill and knowledge base in current trends, research and methodology in instructional techniques, technology, multicultural content, problem solving and interdisciplinary connections through a variety of ways such as networking with other Magnet Program teachers.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional assistants, teacher assistants, and volunteers.
  • Participates in regular professional development aligned with Magnet Program (including but not limited to project and problem-based learning) and providing teacher professional development for colleagues related to those teaching strategies. To focus, design and deliver classroom instruction aligned with and based on the Magnet Program pedagogical philosophies.
  • Plans, supports and leads evening, weekend and summer Magnet events such as parent/family information nights, summer programs, and other co-curricular and career programs regularly.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.
Experience
  • Two (2) years teaching experience required;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/ guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill and experience to support their child’s education experience.
  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
  • Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Professional Eligibility Certificate (PEC) educator certificate appropriate to the assigned teaching content area issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
  • Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.

  • Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
