What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Technician position at Anne Arundel County?
This posting will be used to fill a Full-Time, Environmental Technician, Safety Sensitive position in the Bureau of Waste Management Services in the Department of Public Works.
This is field operations work performing a variety of duties essential to the successful environmental monitoring and operation of a county landfill and other environmental control and remedial systems.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK Work includes landfill leachate collection and conveyance systems, landfill gas collection and flare systems “oversight”, groundwater remediation system operations, groundwater monitoring, stormwater monitoring, erosion and sediment controls, data entry, and other site duties as assigned. Work is performed under general supervision.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are to determine a common set of minimum qualifications and salary levels for all positions in this class. Plans, coordinates, schedules, collects and analyzes field data for groundwater monitoring, stormwater monitoring, leachate collection and conveyance systems, and landfill gas monitoring. Work includes calibrating, operating, and maintaining field sampling and analysis equipment.
Collects, prepares, stores, and delivers water, solid, and gaseous samples for laboratory analysis. Maintains related records such as field conditions, chain of custody, and sample identification.
Operates and maintains groundwater remediation and leachate collection/conveyance systems. Work includes field inspections, conducting tests, maintaining records, and operating and servicing technical equipment to ensure efficient operations complying with regulatory requirements.
Performs various record-keeping functions and maintains documents including logs, field records, computerized databases, and sampling records. Updates operation and maintenance records.
Performs overtime work and on-call work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to carry out instructions provided in written and oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Knowledge of leachate and landfill gas collection system, the calibration and use of liquid and gas monitoring equipment, the treatment and disposal of leachate, and the monitoring of groundwater, leachate, and storm water.
Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements for groundwater, stormwater, solid waste, industrial wastewater discharges, and sediment and erosion control.
Basic electrical and mechanical skills.
Ability to obtain training in landfill gas/leachate management and treatment, confined space, spill response, and hazwoper.
Ability to troubleshoot various complex situations involving landfill gas/leachate components. Education: Graduation from high school.
Experience: Two (2) or more years experience in environmental contamination, pollution, emissions control, or related work; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol Testing.
NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.
