Position Overview:

The Materials Manager will oversee the planning, procurement, storage, control, and distribution of materials and components according to company needs and customer requirements. This position will direct all activities involved in the identification, acquisition, and distribution of company goods. As a leader, the Materials Manager will be responsible for hiring, training, and performance actions of the materials team, as well as coordinating the daily workflow and schedules of the department.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborates with other departments to identify and develop needs and requirements for equipment, materials, products, and acceptable substitutions
  • Maintains instructions, policies, and procedures for purchasing and contract management
  • Implements/maintains materials portion of the company’s manufacturing software system
  • Assesses current material availability; reasonably predicts future availability based on the market, sales forecasts, and other variables
  • Coordinates purchasing, inventory control, shipping and receiving, and materials storage
  • Maintains inventory levels and required supplies and materials to ensure optimize production and on-time delivery of finished goods
  • Works with purchasing to schedule delivery of materials, supplies, and equipment; expedites materials when needed
  • Oversees shipping and receiving functions related to purchased parts and finished goods
  • Identifies opportunities to increase efficiency of supply chain and profitability for the company
  • Establishes performance metrics for measurement, comparison, or evaluation of factors affecting the supply chain
  • Participates as an advisory member of the engineering and sales teams, providing information and guidance on availability and cost of supplies and material
  • Monitors the performance of suppliers
  • Negotiates prices for materials and delivery 
  • Approves purchase orders and prepares and processes purchase orders and requisitions for materials, supplies, and equipment when needed
  • Oversees the daily workflow and schedules of the department
  • Handles hiring, training, management, and the discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy
  • Performs other duties as required

  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills with a proven ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with all levels of management and staff, as well as vendors, suppliers, shippers, and customers
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field required
  • At least 5 years of experience in materials control field (purchasing, procurement, planning, production control, scheduling) required
  • Three years of experience as a supervisor, manager, or similar relevant position required
  • Proficient with inventory and manufacturing systems
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time
