Job Overview
This position serves under the general supervision of the Fire Chief. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the 911 Communication Center. The 9-1-1 Dispatch Supervisor also directs and supervise subordinate staff, including assigning and delegating work projects; scheduling employees to ensure proper staffing levels are maintained; performance management including evaluating work performance; coaching, mentoring and/or implementing corrective action for performance and conduct issues. This position will require participation in advanced management training courses and customer service improvement workshops.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Performs all key tasks and duties of the Communications Dispatcher
- Supervises Dispatch personnel and plans work assignments to ensure that the Agency's service and production expectations are achieved
- Evaluates shift operations through personal observation of dispatchers and recommends improvements or modifications to work practices and employee performance as appropriate
- Works proactively with staff to resolve performance or personnel issues at the lowest level
- Conducts employee evaluations, reviews and approve s employee timesheets, and investigates and resolves complaints or problems
- Identifies issues and implements basic corrective actions including oral counseling and oral warnings; discusses need for further corrective action with Operations Manager and/or Human Resources Manager as appropriate
- Coordinates major incidents to ensure that proper notifications are made; assists in call handling if necessary and coordinates with Incident Command
- Stays regularly aware of employee actions and behavior for signs of stress, coping and general emotional well-being; specifically watches for these signs during or any time after high stress and major incidents
- Responds to law enforcement requests for information, monitors several public safety authorities to coordinate dispatching of services between two or more agencies
- Ensures technical equipment is properly maintained regularly serviced and fully functional
- Reviews Police/Fire/EMS calls for compliance to protocol, citizen evaluation surveys, etc
- Completes a variety of reports and correspondence relating to dispatch activities in a timely manner, such as investigations, inquiries, or preparation of documents for court purposes including CAD reports, ANI/ALI reports, etc
- In case of emergency or other necessity, transfers Operations to and sets up the Dispatch Operations backup center and shuts down dispatch activities
- Execution of all implementation plans to meet customer requirements
- Provide effective supervision and technical assistance to all personnel connected with maintenance and repair activities
- Promote a management team approach to Department of Emergency Services (DES) maintenance projects
- Initiate and approve requisitions for supplies and equipment
- Issue written and oral directions to all Dispatchers
- Comply with all Company policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications:
Applicant must a high school diploma or equivalent and a Valid California Class C Driver's License. Must be able to work cooperatively with subordinates, peers, and supervisors. Must maintain certification in Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Emergency Fire Dispatching, and Emergency Police Dispatching, Emergency Dispatcher Quality Assurance, Pro Q/A Certifications, and Hold a current CPR Card.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years' experience as a 911 or Police/Fire dispatcher
- Must be familiar with Fire Manager Software
- Capable of reviewing and analyzing data and information concerning Emergency Medical Dispatching
- Knowledge of CLETS activities
WORKING CONDITIONS
Perform multiple tasks in a climate-controlled atmosphere. May spend long hours at a personal computing station/dispatch console, which requires frequent sitting. Work 12-hour shifts and occasionally longer as situation requires, either days or nights as assigned/ Communicate with the public frequently using the telephone and/or in person. Occasional travel required within Fort Irwin.
