What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Communication Specialist position at Aptive?

Aptive is seeking a full-time Data Storyteller with five to seven years of demonstrated experience identifying and using research to create meaningful content. This may include, but is not limited to, developing annual reports, research publications, outreach materials, inter-agency communications, website materials, and social media posts. The ideal candidate possesses a strong acumen for strategic communications, a firm understanding of both qualitative and quantitative data findings, and a proven capability to translate technical and highly complex subject matters into easily digestible narratives. S/he should have experience organizing and presenting data in both written and visual formats.

This position requires a strategic mindset that is firmly rooted in research best practices. A successful candidate will be highly organized, proactive, and detail oriented. S/he should be comfortable developing innovative solutions to improve the appearance, presentation, organization, and functionality of numerous research-based materials. This includes being competent in graphic design with the ability to create a variety of data visualizations.

This full-time position is located at the Aptive Resources offices in Alexandria, VA. Opportunities for telework are also available. Aptive is currently working remotely due to COVID-19.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS.

  • Five to seven years of communications experience.
  • At least two years analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Demonstrated experience developing content for print, digital, and social platforms.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or related field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

DESIRED SKILLS.

  • Familiarity with developing content for annual reports or similar publications.
  • Technical writing experience within science-related domains.
  • Graphic design and data visualization experience.
  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline preferred.
  • Strong organization, time-management, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
  • Desire to work in a fast-pace environment and carry out multiple tasks under tight deadlines.

JOB DUTIES.

  • Produce content for inter-agency communications, external engagement, outreach activities, and large-scale, high-profile publications, such as annual reports.
  • Analyze existing publications to develop and implement new formats and delivery methods to expand reach among existing and new audiences
  • Work closely with researchers and other NSF staff members to ensure alignment, provide training, and manage fact-checking.
  • Develop distribution plans for redesigned publications among multiple audiences.
  • Track communications metrics and establish status reports on project-related activities.
  • Support agency website development and social media efforts, as necessary.
