Associate Scientist - Analytical Chemistry

Arcaea is building a new ingredient toolset for the beauty and personal care industry - one rooted in biotechnology with the aim of delivering radical performance and unparalleled sustainability that will also present new opportunities for storytelling. This role will be critical to shaping and driving Arcaea’s ethos around a “biology-first” future for the industry. We are building an organization where technology and storytelling coexist in a symbiotic relationship. To accomplish our vision we will need to be really good at two things: consumer engagement and technical innovation - and they will need to work together in concert.

This position will work to support our Analytical Platform and gain specialization in the identification and validation of ingredient candidates, including method and assay development. The candidate will be expected to support material characterization, application testing, and the implementation of analytical approaches for the elucidation of mechanism of action and/or structure-function relationships. This position requires continuous learning and a working knowledge in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and/or organic chemistry with an entrepreneurial and collaborative spirit.

Execute key initiatives:

  • Assist with early discovery activities focused on identification testing of novel materials for applications in personal care.

  • Perform literature reviews on raw material identification, in process, and finished product testing strategies.

  • Assist with the analytical testing method development, method transfer and method validation.

  • Characterize of novel biosynthesized materials, including but not limited to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, peptides, and/or UV-active compounds, for formulation-based personal care applications.

  • Utilize LIMS and ELN to document all experimental approaches, data, results and observations.

  • Responsible for routine analyses of submitted samples and oversight of the sample submission process for the analytical chemistry testing platform.

  • Maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.

  • May participate in the development of patent applications.

  • Collaborate closely with the members of the technical team to reach company goals.

  • Use professional concepts to contribute to the development of Arcaea concepts and principles and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.

  • Do “whatever it takes” to get the job done and work effectively and efficiently including on a tight deadline without drama or ego. We are a dynamic startup whose priorities may need to shift.

Desired Experience and Capabilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Analytical Chemistry, Surface and Colloid Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Science or Physical Chemistry with 2 years of experience conducting analytical analyses.

  • A proven track record of successful design, implementation and validation of technology concepts

  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought

  • Demonstrated history of creativity in developing assays that support technology development

  • Has leveraged state of art instrumentation to achieve successful proof of principle targets using either traditional or novel approaches

  • Demonstrates self- motivation, strong analytical skills and independent thinking, as well as flexibility in a dynamic environment
