Overview
The Medication/ Treatment Nurse is responsible for administration of all medications and treatments ( except those specifically designated for an RN) during her tour of duty, according to the established medical and nursing care plan. Works under the direction of the Head/ Charge Nurse to provide optimum nursing care to all residents on the unit.
Responsibilities
- Receives report from previous shift, making sure that he/she has received all pertinent information on each resident.
- Organizes assignment for most efficient use of time.
- Sets priorities in meeting the needs of residents.
- Continuously evaluates behavior, symptoms, reactions and progress of residents and discusses findings with Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
- Administers all medications according to established policies and procedures and physician's orders.
- Performs all treatments according to physician’s specific order and established policies and procedures.
- Discusses the need to discontinue or change a medication of treatment with the Nurse Manager/ Charge Nurse.
- Supervises, performs and/ or assists with resident care as indicated: assists with feeding of residents.
- Assists with orientation and instructions of other nursing personnel as required.
- Takes and transcribes physician's orders accurately and promptly
- Orders prescribed medications, notifies pharmacy of discontinued medications: and ensures accuracy of medications and dosages when received from pharmacy.
- Assists with requisitions supplies and equipment as needed; ensures their proper utilization.
- Documents all medications administered as indicated in established policy and procedures and according to the Department of Health regulations.
- Helps to maintain all unit records against physician's orders to ensure accuracy before the first of each month.
- Reviews medication administration records against physician's orders to ensure accuracy before the first of each month.
- Reviews treatment records monthly.
- Reports any medication error to Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse
- When administering medications, is responsible to keep medications cart clean at all times, especially at end of the shift.
- Maybe requested to accompany physicians on rounds.
- May assist Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse in formulating and revising nursing care plans, and checks that nursing rehabilitation recommendations are carried out.
- Maybe requested to assume full responsibility of the unit during the absence of Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
