This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief of Operations, House Office Buildings, Client Services Division.  The House Office Buildings jurisdiction is accepting applications for a Laborer (Recycler) to perform a wide range of laborer duties including setting up and arranging furniture, moving furniture, supplies, boxes and construction materials, operating floor care equipment, and performing other cleaning and maintenance tasks.  

Responsibilities:

Tour of Duty:  Hours will range from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm

Shifts May Change Due to Operating Needs of Management.

This position is emergency essential - Depending on the type of emergency the employee may be required to report to work during emergency situations.

Duties Include:

  • Loads and unloads heavy boxes, bulky supplies, and heavy construction building materials and supplies to and from trucks; moves heavy boxes and cartons by hand, hand truck, or dolly; opens crates and boxes using crowbars and cuts bands using shears; and stacks boxes and cartons where directed. Collects trash and debris, including horticultural debris, from Congressional Buildings and surrounding grounds. Performs such other tasks as clearing snow and ice from building entrances, spreading salt, and picking up litter.
  • Performs a wide range of custodial duties in a variety of areas such as common work areas, hallways, building entrance areas, office spaces, restaurant facilities, machine rooms, storage areas, closets, stairways, conference rooms, restrooms, and/or similar type work environments. Picks up trash and delivers it to the trash room.
  • Washes ceiling fixtures, room partitions, and Venetian blinds using ladders and scaffolds. Washes windows on a specified schedule. Sweeps, vacuums, mops, strips, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors with appropriate powered equipment including heavy buffing machines. Cleans, adjusts, and oils powered equipment, and changes rollers, buffers, brushes and other attachments as needed.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes lavatories, urinals, and toilet bowls. Replaces supplies as required. Keeps a stock of cleaning materials, restroom supplies, and equipment needed and informs supervisor when more materials are needed and when equipment is in need of repair.
  • Notes condition of buildings and reports to supervisor any facility related issues or other conditions requiring maintenance or repair, such as lights that do not switch on, damaged floor coverings, and electrical outlets that do not function properly.
  • Collects and sorts recyclable material, including aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles, newspaper, and paper, from various locations within the buildings. Relines recycle containers with plastic bags. Places recycled material in appropriate locations as determined by management. Collects all wet waste material from various locations within buildings and relines all wet waste containers and disposes of all wet waste materials. Cleans recycling containers as necessary.
  • Provides set-up and support for special events. Sets up dining areas, meeting rooms, auditoriums, classrooms, etc., in various configurations for many types of events. Cleans, maintains, and stores meeting and special function equipment and furnishings. Moves and arranges furniture and equipment for changes in room assignments or room configurations. Moves items that may weigh more than 80 lbs.
  • May receive flags from the Flag Office for flag flying operations. Runs flags up flagpoles and returns them to the Flag Office.
  • Must follow all relevant safety rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. Must utilize knowledge of and must comply with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment is fully utilized. Must ensure the use of any required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), etc.
