General Purpose and Objective of Position:
The Skills Coach position’s general purpose is to provide effective and efficient daily direct-care services to the organization’s customers (program participants). During their scheduled shifts, Skills Coaches routinely provide supervision, training, and assistance to all assigned customers, which primarily includes, ensuring that the customers’ Individual Plans of Care are strictly followed. At a minimum, direct-care services may include, but not be limited to, supervision, training, and assistance with: shopping, house-hold cleaning/maintenance, meal preparation, medication assistance, personal care, toileting, ambulating, community inclusion activities, transportation, and accessing community resources.

Legal Requirements:

  • This position requires that the employee be at least 18-years-old.
  • This position requires that the employee present, upon hire, documentation that meets the requirements of the federal I-9 form. If any of those documents expire, i.e. driver’s license, then current documents will be required to satisfy the requirement of the I-9, and subsequently maintain employment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Experience Requirements:

  • This position requires that the employee possess and practice exceptional emotionally-intelligent verbal and written communication skills.
  • This position requires that the employee possess the ability to multitask and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
  • This position requires that the employee possess basic computer skills and software knowledge for documentation purposes; and smart-phone possession and usage is a must.
  • This position requires that the employee possess at least high-school-level reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.
  • This position requires the employee to hold a valid driver’s license, insurable driving record, safe operational vehicle with current insurance, and the ability transport program participants is a must.
  • This position requires that the employee possess light-janitorial/housekeeping knowledge and experience.
  • This position requires that the employee possess other basic equipment experience, such as, vacuum cleaner and kitchen appliances.
  • This position requires that the employee possess meal-planning and preparation experience.

Education/Certificates/Licenses/Registration Requirements:

  • This position prefers a high school diploma or its formal equivalent, but does not require it. And while a high school diploma (or formal equivalent) is preferred but not required, this position does require that the employee possess, at a minimum, high-school-level reading, writing, and arithmetic skills – as demonstrated by the following: The ability to read, interpret, and follow Individual Plans of Care, policies, procedures, practices, and legal requirements of the job. The ability to write a basic essay in a clear and concise manner. The ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and perform basic algebra.
  • This position requires that the employee obtain and maintain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) certification.
  • This position requires that the employee obtain and maintain BHD Medication Assistance certification.
  • This position requires that the employee obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification.

Training Requirements:

This position requires that the employee complete or produce all required training and certifications at the beginning of their employment, and on an on-going basis throughout their employment. Each employee is required to attend all new-hire training, certification courses, as well as all on- going scheduled and un-scheduled training and recertification courses.

Cognitive/Verbal/Physical Requirements:

  • This position is cognitively, verbally, and physically intensive; and requires stamina and endurance that can handle extended periods of: problem-solving, interacting and communicating with others, sitting, standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs. solo for shopping and cleaning, and up to 200lbs. with assistance for transferring people to/from wheelchairs, etc.), bending, kneeling, reaching, squatting, bending at the knees, turning around, stooping, crouching, balancing, talking (on the phone and in-person), typing, writing, reading, computing, and arithmaticing for the duration of a work assignment (approximately 95-100% of the work day). This position requires that the employee read, write, type, speak, and comprehend the English language at the minimum of a high-school-level. This position requires near- and far-sighted vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires shift-flexibility; as shift duration is regularly between four and sixteen hours per day, and can be extended (depending on the daily work-load).

Typical/Potential Environmental Exposures:

  • This position may encounter various indoor or outdoor environments. Most service environments are climate-controlled and indoors; however, the employee will be exposed to slick or dry surfaces and/or hot or cold temperatures for outside errands, activities, and events. Environments can also vary in level of stimulation and noise due to fluctuations in customer traffic and activities.
  • Bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious bodily fluids could be present. Bloodborne pathogens training is required for all employees so that they are able to understand the correct way to address contaminated people, areas, and/or surfaces.
  • Bleach and other sanitizers are used to disinfect relevant surfaces.
  • Safety googles, gloves, and other PPE are readily accessible.
  • First aid kits are readily accessible.

Essential Duties/Functions of the Position:

  • This position requires the employee to meet all cognitive, verbal, physical, education, certification, licensing, registration, legal, and equipment requirements of the job.
  • This position requires that the employee regularly and reliably report to work, training, and meetings; stay awake and alert during work, training, and meetings; and follow company policies and procedures for arranging time away from work.
  • This position requires the employee to have the ability to work varying days and hours as scheduled.
  • This position requires the employee to have and maintain a valid driver’s license, insurable driving record, safe operational vehicle with current insurance, and ability to transport the organization’s customers.
  • This position requires the employee to complete and approve an electronic or other required timesheet/timecard for their completed work time each day.
  • This position requires that the employee follow all policies, procedures, and practices at all times, and as written, unless official accommodation or dispensation is given by executive leadership.

  • This position requires the employee to observe and document both negative and positive behaviors to aid and assist in the development of customer training goals and schedules.
  • This position requires the employee to attend to routine healthcare needs of customers, such as, but not limited to: medication assistance, skin integrity, PRN medications, oxygen levels, and any other changes in routine healthcare needs as required under the supervision of medical professionals.
  • This position requires that the employee assist customers with activities of daily living, including, but not limited to: safely transferring, repositioning, or physically assisting people to or from wheelchairs, beds, adaptive equipment, etc.
  • This position requires that the employee provide direct-care to customers, including, but not limited to: cleaning of bodily fluids, personal care and hygiene, assistance with eating, etc.
  • This position requires the employee to notify appropriate parties of Critical Incidents as identified by the BHD.
  • This position requires that the employee accurately and legally complete all documentation as required by company policy and regulatory entities.
  • This position requires the employee to perform additionally assigned duties in a manner which are generally expected and consistent with other similar positions.
