Under the supervision of the Coordinator Senior, the Educational Outreach Specialist helps to develop, implement, and oversee high school academic enrichment and advising, coordinates the tutorial/lab components and workshops, provides college preparation workshops and activities, oversees tutoring and mentoring activities, monitors academic progress, captures and enters data and assists in various other related duties which generate, in participants, the skills and motivation necessary to enter and complete a program of secondary/post-secondary education. All of the programs within Access ASU focus on preparing students for enrollment and success in higher education. The ideal candidate must work well independently in a fast-paced, flexible environment, provide a high level of customer service to both the university and external communities, and make strong contributions both as an individual and as a team player. This position requires evidence of effective time management skills and success in being accountable for specific outcomes. Daily driving to Westwood High School will be required.

Essential Duties

  • Work as part of a team to support Access ASU and GEAR UP programs and goals, specifically at Westwood High School
  • Develop strategic action plans in accordance with program and school goals/objectives
  • Serve as a liaison for GEAR UP with high school students, families, schools and community partners
  • Support the development and implementation of the GEAR UP program including academic and skill-building workshops, meetings, conferences, online offerings and other university opportunities that promote college knowledge and readiness for K-12 schools, students and families
  • Serve as a coach, advocate, and liaison for participating students
  • Provide supervision and leadership to assigned student staff to ensure successful development and implementation of academic enrichment, tutoring, and mentoring
  • Assist with marketing and recruitment efforts targeted at growing the number of participants and ensuring continued engagement with GEAR UP participants and families
  • Support participant communications for programs, including web, social media, texting, and digital strategies
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Outreach/Access ASU staff, K-12 schools, community organizations, ASU students, faculty, and staff to effectively implement programs and strategic initiatives
  • Generate necessary reports documenting, monitoring progress towards GEAR UP goals, and tracking for ensuring all aspects of function/program are implemented and controlled according to plans
  • Assist with ongoing data collection and tracking as needed for all university and federal reporting, including the annual performance report
  • Travel to off-campus meetings and events regularly, using personal vehicle
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Applicant must have a current Driver’s License and vehicle
  • Work location is in person at Westwood High School – during school closures (breaks, PD days, school holidays, etc.), the work location will be in person at the assigned ASU campus (Tempe-University Center B)
  • Work schedule will be flexible, depending on when programs are offered, to include nights and weekends. On days when programs are not offered, work schedule will be Monday – Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two (2) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in Education or related field
  • Evidence of being able to speak, write and read in Spanish/English (Bilingual)
  • Experience working with diverse student populations in middle or high schools and/or higher education
  • Experience supervising student staff
  • Experience working with college preparatory programs that serve first-generation and/or low-income students
  • Experience developing and/or implementing college readiness programs
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Experience managing multiple projects and prioritizing workload
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic computer skills, including use of MS Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, Outlook), Google Drive and ASU computer systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Salesforce, Canvas, etc.)
