JOB DESCRIPTION: Human Resources announces an opening for a 1.0 FTE Electrician I/II ,M-9. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES Performs a variety of skilled electrical tasks involving the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, controls and equipment at school district buildings, grounds and facilities. Installs, inspects, troubleshoots, tests, and otherwise maintain electrical systems and system components such as interior and exterior lighting, electrical power outlets, master clocks, computer lab, fire alarm, and other similar electrical systems and equipment. SUPERVISION Work is performed under the general or indirect supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor. Incumbents at the II level (and occasionally at the I level) may serve as on-site crew leader over one or more trainees, other electricians, summer student or community service workers. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the pre-journey (apprentice) (level I) and journey (level II) electrician class. Many maintenance tasks are performed at schools, centers, and offices while others are performed in a shop or fixed site. Positions in this class are differentiated from the Electrician III classification, the master level, a competitive (not career ladder) classification. Placement on and progression through the ladder is based on proficiency, training, regulations, and employment standards.
Incumbents who meet the experience and proficiency requirements at the time this specification is adopted and all candidates appointed to this classification at the electrician I level may be advanced noncompetitively to electrician II after successful completion of training and fulfillment of all career ladder advancement requirements, upon recommendation of a director and approval by the Department of Personnel Services.
Outside candidates who are highly qualified, as determined by the Department of Personnel Services, may be appointed directly to the II level. GUIDELINES School Board Policies and Policy Implementation Procedures, work orders, supervisor’s instructions, manufactures equipment installation & repair manuals; building /equipment wiring diagrams; OSHA and EPA guidelines, national and state county electrical codes, and standard trades practices. RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed; not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated) Confers with Supervisor to learn nature of work assignments, and to advise or consult on crew assignments, equipment to be used, and materials to be obtained or purchased. Utilizes computerized system to order materials and equipment and maintains stock on service trucks. Performs a variety of skilled electrical duties on the interior and exterior of school buildings and facilities, including single and multi-phase work on electrical systems and associated equipment; conducts regular inspections of facilities and performs preventative maintenance. Trouble-shoots, tests, and locates problems; repairs or replaces electrical components and equipment including electrical motors, motor controls, blowers, pumps, indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, control panels, main and distribution circuit breakers, lighting and power distribution panel boards, and surge protectors. Maintains and modifies existing electrical service lines; installs new electrical conduit and wiring; determines the type, size, location, routing and design of conduit and wiring. Uses hand, measuring, and power tools and equipment and a variety of testing and tracing meters to install, test, or replace lighting, power or other electrical systems, fixtures, plugs, lights, wires, and equipment. Programs and re-programs bell schedules and master clock systems. Climbs onto roof or up walls to mount security lighting fixture, lights and wiring, and other electrical equipment, using ladders, scaffolds, or power lifts. Tests and repairs kitchen equipment, such as ovens and food warmer. Performs periodic preventative maintenance to ensure system remains fully operational. Maintains records on work of crew and contractors, problems or systems changes. Performs routine maintenance and repair on tools, equipment and vehicles. As assigned, leads and inspects work performed by crew, summer student workers and/or community service workers.
Provides guidance and training as necessary. Ensures all safety precautions, regulations and equipment are utilized appropriately, and that work complies with county building codes. Loads, unloads supplies and equipment to automotive vehicle, and operates vehicle to/from work site. Participates in set up and clean up of work-site to ensure safe environment. Performs related work as required, or assigned. Ability to perform work of the trade at the full journey level, and to assign, observe, monitor, train, and lead subordinate trades staff Both Levels: Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, and to read and interpret plans, diagrams, drawings, prints, schematics, etc. Ability to use arithmetic computations to measure, calculate distances, electrical power needs, and costs, etc, and ability to maintain records. Ability to develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships. QUALIFICATIONS: Electrician I : Graduation from high school (or GED), including some courses in industrial arts and/or shop mechanics, and a combination of education/ training equivalent to an electrician apprenticeship and some work experience in electrical wiring, lighting or other systems installation, testing and operations as trainee or helper. Electrician II : Graduation from high school (or GED), including some courses in industrial arts and/or shop mechanics, and a combination of education/ training equivalent to an electrician apprenticeship and considerable maintenance electrical work experience, some of which shall have been at the level of electrician I. PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Work requires sufficient strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential functions, including operating and using all tools and equipment, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, reaching in front of body and overhead while holding objects weighing up to 50 pounds, walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time, climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, and lifts up to 40 feet high. HAZARDS/ UNUSUAL DEMANDS Work is performed both inside and outside school district building and facilities, and often requires working unusual hours or evening shifts.
