Position:  Executive Director/CEO, Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Employed by:  Board of Directors, The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Responsible to:  Board of Directors, The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Immediate supervisor:  Board of Directors Status:  Full-time, Exempt Employee   Basic Function The Executive Director/CEO (ED) is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, “the Museum,” including its administration and management, personnel and volunteers, financial operations, fundraising, marketing, public relations, and for maintaining and researching the collection. The ED provides leadership and assistance to the Board of Directors in accomplishing the Museum’s Mission and Vision in celebrating the power of art.   Promoting and coordinating the Museum’s vision of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA)   Specific Responsibilities and Duties   Board Relations
  • Reports to the Board of Directors
  • Facilitates preparation for Board and Committee meetings, as well as the implementation of Board decisions.
  • Attends meetings and serves as a consultant on all Board committees.
  • Ensures the timely and comprehensive flow of information between the Board, Committees, and staff.
  • Keeps Board and Committees apprised of local, state, and national issues that may impact the Museum’s achievement of its Mission and Vision.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, supervision, and continuous evaluation of strategic plan progress and outcomes.
  Art League and Foundation Board Relations
  • Prepares reports for all governing Board, Foundation Board, and Art League meetings and attends in an ex-officio capacity.
  • Assigns staff support for board and committee meetings as appropriate.
  • Provides coordination lending professional expertise for the Art League and Foundation Board.
  Staff Relations
  • Provides day-to-day leadership, management, and oversight for the Museums’ operation.
  • Employs, supervises, empowers, and assigns staff or volunteers to effectively manage the Museum, its programs, and services.
  • Oversees the working relationships with independent contractors and faculty.
  • Maintains legally appropriate personnel records.
  • Provides and/or facilitates training for staff or volunteers to ensure professional development.
  • Will put forth an effort to identify where systemic bias and discrimination happens and continuously strive to improve DEIA.
  Development and Fund Raising
  • Develops and implements an annual fundraising program to include memberships, annual fundraising, and special fundraising.
  • Sources, applies for, and administers the implementation of grants.
  • Secures sources of sponsorship for events and special exhibits.
  • Aware of opportunities in estate planning, planned giving, and investments.
  • Continually cultivates potential and existing donor relationships and donor-driven funding.
  Community Relations
  • Demonstrates ability to develop & maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, including artists, educational institutions, government entities, and local non-profit organizations.
  • Maintains high visibility in the community, serves as Museum advocate.
  • Manages media relations and information release to include web presence, social media, and direct communication.
  • Identifies and engages under-represented groups (for example, BIPOC) in museum programs, activities, and services.
  Program Administration
  • Participates in most Museum member and public functions such as exhibition openings, special events, lectures, and tours.
  • Participates in local, state, and national organization efforts that are consistent with the Museum’s Mission and Vision.
  • Provides for volunteer recruitment, training, and supervision.
  • Develops, manages, and coordinates events, exhibitions, art education & programs, ensuring these reflect the Museum’s commitment to meeting the art-related interests of under-represented groups.
  Fiscal Management
  • Administers fiscal policies developed by the Board.
  • Supervises the preparation of and adherence to the Museum's annual operating, capital, and program budgets.
  • Supervises operations related to the accounting system, investment reporting, and financial records.
  Facilities Administration
  • Oversees museum facilities, grounds, security, environmental systems.
  • Ensures the safety of staff, faculty, volunteers, students, and visitors.
  Collection Acquisition, Preservation, and Maintenance
  • Guides the collections committee relative to the accession and de-accession of works of art for the Permanent Collection.
  • Maintains the Permanent Collection to meet the American Alliance of Museums accreditation standards.
  Other Duties
  • Attends regional and national museum conferences, seminars, webinars, or classes to keep abreast of current museum trends and ways to connect with underserved and diverse populations.
  • As requested by the Board of Directors.
      Essential Qualifications  
  • Minimum of five (5) years relevant, effective leadership experience.
  • Experience leading, servicing, and working with a not-for-profit board of directors.
  • Understanding of fundraising & demonstrated ability to cultivate prospective donors.
  • Knowledge of and provides examples of collaboration with other organizations.
  • Ability to develop & maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute long-term and short-term strategies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Arts in a way that understands and appreciates cultural variables.
  Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the not-for-profit environment.
  • Has held previous administrative position in a museum.
  • Experience working in a Visual Arts Organization.
  • College degree in finance, art, not-for-profit management, for example, or equivalent experience.
