What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Manager, API position at Asana?
Asana’s API gives external developers the power and flexibility to extend Asana's functionality in creative ways that Asana doesn't yet provide. In turn, this rich ecosystem of apps, integrations, and scripts helps us ensure that Asana can support every customer use case out there – no matter how big or small the team, and no matter which tools or workflows they use. The API team at Asana builds the Developer Platform that makes this possible; we own the gateway that facilitates data flow in and out of Asana.
We’re looking for an empathetic and strategic Engineering Manager to lead this engineering team that extends across platforms and products. You’ll work closely with your Tech Lead and Product Manager to help the API team craft and deliver a vision, strategy, and roadmap that drives tremendous value to our largest customers. If you care deeply about building effective interfaces and experiences for other developers, then we’d love to hear from you!
This role is based in our San Francisco office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. Along with most Asanas, you’ll work from this office in person on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you're interviewing for this role, your Talent Acquisition Partner will share more about the in-office requirements.
What you’ll achieve
- Manage a team of 6-8 product engineers
- Own the guidelines for what good API design and change management looks like, and enable partnered engineering teams to implement those best practices in a self-serve manner
- Partner with Product Management, Design, Data Science, and User Research to deeply understand developer needs, and then propose and deliver elegant solutions to those needs
- Work and learn alongside great peer managers with a strong sense of community
- Coach engineers in their technical and professional development
- Collaborate with engineering leaders across the organization to help keep Asana's workplace balanced, performant, inclusive, and aligned with our values
- Master the arts of delegation and scaling yourself aided by our strong team and frameworks like Asana’s Areas of Responsibility (“AOR”) system
- Work closely with recruiting and other Engineering Managers to expand the team by sourcing & interviewing candidates, participating in conferences and events, and onboarding new employees
About you
- 5 years of experience working in the technology industry, with 2 years experience managing a technical team
- 1 years of building public-facing API products or Developer Platforms
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with other teams
- Experience working cross-functionally with product management and infrastructure teams
- Focused on maximizing impact for yourself, your team, and Asana as a whole
- Care deeply about the happiness, growth, and motivation of your reports
- Equipped with the intelligence, empathy, integrity, and technical chops required to quickly earn the trust of a technically astute team
- Comfortable with ambiguity; you enjoy figuring out what needs to be done—and then doing it
