Embedded Systems Developer

 

We are looking for an Embedded Systems Developer to work within the Hardware Development Team at Traka, reporting to the Hardware Development Manager.

We are looking for a multi-disciplined engineer with primary experience in both electronic hardware and firmware development, but also a good understanding of how this will fit within the overall mechanical design and how it will interface with our software products.

 

 

What you would do as our Embedded Systems Developer

 

The role will involve all aspects of the electronic product development life-cycle from initial concept through to production, covering design, PCB layout and firmware development, as well as other supporting tasks such as creating test fixtures and documentation.

 

The ideal candidate would have a keen interest in all areas of embedded product development and a desire to learn and further develop their engineering experience as well as share existing experience with the team. Our product development covers a wide range of electronic disciplines including microcontrollers, power supplies, RF/RFID, digital and analogue

 

You would also:

 

  • Participate in the development and implementation of new electronic products from initial development stage through to handover to manufacturing
  • Participate in the development and implementation of embedded firmware written in C
  • Understand, develop, maintain and support existing product firmware and hardware
  • Build and test prototypes
  • Provide support and documentation for hardware developments such as schematics, BOMs and test procedures
  • Document your research and development for others to understand and learn from
  • Provide high level technical support to the rest of the business where required

 

The skills and experience you need

 

We are looking for someone who:

 

  • Has worked for at least 3 years in electronic product development roles
  • Has a keen interest in electronics and firmware (embedded C)
  • Has a desire to continually improve and learn
  • Works well within multi-disciplinary R&D team as well as on individual projects
  • Has a close attention to detail
  • Is willing to help and support others
  • Has a strong ability to analyse and understand technical problems

 

Ideally, you would also have:

 

  • Relevant qualifications in Electronics or equivalent discipline
  • Experience developing electronic products from the ground up through to production
  • Electronics design skills (across microcontrollers, analogue, digital and power supplies)
  • Experience with full PCB design process covering libraries, schematic, PCB layout and manufacturing file generation
  • Experience with firmware design and debugging (embedded C)
  • Experience with performing electronic testing and using common test equipment (oscilloscopes, bench PSU, multimeters etc.)
  • Good hands-on prototyping skills – soldering, wiring, mechanical
  • Working knowledge of various communication interfaces such as CAN, RS232, RS485, SPI, I2C, USB, Ethernet etc.
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Strong documentation and writing skills
  • Experience selecting and sourcing electronic components

 

Also nice to have:

 

  • Experience with using Altium / Easy-PC ECAD packages
  • Experience with RFID / wireless technologies
  • Software development experience (i.e. C# VB.net)
  • Windows CE / Embedded Linux Experience
  • Personal interest in engineering outside of work – example home projects

 

This role would fall under R&D flexible working scheme where you have the option to choose when to work from home or the office. However, the nature of the role will mean that visits to the office in Olney are required for some prototyping and testing tasks.

The Hardware Development Team all visit the office every Wednesday as a sync point and on other days as tasks required.
