What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Financial Analyst position at Assurant?
Assurant is looking for a detail-oriented individual with great problem-solving skills to join our Finance team. The Lead Financial Analyst role works with the organization’s cost accounting methodology and underlying data to analyze key drivers that help improve the operational and financial effectiveness of the business. They will work directly with the operational areas to explain monthly expense variances and provide quarterly updated forecasts. They effectively present the results for their analyses and recommendations to management and Finance.
Primary Responsibilities
Prepare and develop concise variance analysis (e.g., actual results, plan, forecast) for Expenses at the segment, business unit, and other levels on a monthly and quarterly basis.
Identify, explain, and provide insights into trends, drivers, key performance indicators, risks, and opportunities by using data-driven approaches.
Prepare multi-year forecasts for Global Housing Operations LOBs and cost centers.
Perform analytical assignments of a complex nature.
Work closely with the operational leaders and Enterprise Finance Teams to enhance the reporting and forecasting processes.
Prepares monthly reporting for management. Summarizes material key operating information explaining monthly results against prior month and target.
Analyzes operational and financial data and extracts and defines relevant information; interprets data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project future performance. Make recommendations such as adjustments to budgets and forecasts and other cost improvement measures.
Tracks and reports on monthly progress relating to ongoing savings initiatives.
Reviews costs and performs cost benefit analysis related to projects and/or initiatives.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required – Finance or Accounting
Minimum 4-5 years’ experience in Finance; with experience in financial analytics and forecasting
Solid knowledge of financial variance analysis
Advanced problem-solving skills
Ability to adapt procedures, processes, and techniques to more complex problems and issues
Advanced and sophisticated analytical techniques
Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems
Ability to manipulate and analyze financial data, prepare financial reports, using an advanced level of Excel and PowerPoint
Team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Willingness to go above and beyond to do the best possible job
Ability to work under tight timelines
Other Requirements
Knowledge of finance, accounting (including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), budgeting and variance analysis
Ability to work independently and collaborate with internal teams, at multiple levels, settings, and across time zones
Strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Critical and innovative thinking
Occasionally will have to work extended hours, weekends and be available for limited business travel (if needed)

Preferred Qualifications
Cost Accounting experience strongly preferred
Experience identifying, evaluating, and resolving financial, accounting and data quality discrepancies
Ability to utilize sophisticated automated data systems, data analysis tools, and dynamic spreadsheet / database design in providing comprehensive decision support to executive management
Thorough understanding of business issues and concepts related to insurance or financial services industry
IBM Planning Analytics (EPA and PAX) or experience with similar planning tools
