JOB SUMMARY:

An ATS Project Development Engineer (PDE) supports the acquisition, growth, and expansion of direct to owner design-build Energy Performance Contracting (ESPC), ESCO, and other energy related services. This role includes working with both internal teams, subcontractors, and customers to identify and develop turnkey design-build energy contracting solutions.

The ATS PDE reports to the ATS Energy Business Development Manager (BDM) and will lead the development and transition of an energy project from sales to Construction Management. The development of an energy project includes, but is not limited to, project scope of work development, cost estimating, energy engineering coordination, initial subcontractor/consultant, and internal team management, Energy Services Proposal development support, site field investigation and data gathering, utility incentive and energy efficiency grant management, and ongoing project management scoping support.

The Project Development Engineer requires knowledge of building systems and the energy engineering field, but also requires strong interpersonal, teamwork, and communications skills while also being able to handle project and role ambiguity.

The ideal candidate has C-suite sales experience, energy project and energy conservation measure development experience, energy sales experience, a solid understanding of building systems and controls, the ability to work independently and within a team, a strong work ethic, and is self-motivated. This is an exempt position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support HVAC and other facility energy conservation and improvement measure development while working with the BDM, subcontractors, consultants, and owners.
  • Gather key customer project information including utility data, facility profiles, system operating characteristics, system data and trends, and site drawings.
  • Manage the project transition from Business Development to Construction.
  • Manage and coordinate energy and engineering studies as directed by BDM.
  • Provide internal project booking and contract management support with BDM.
  • Support the development of project scope and design with consultants and subcontractor partners, from conceptual project design narratives to preliminary engineering documents through construction documents.
  • Support BDM develop and establish design and construction budgets and estimates, subcontractor and subconsultant scopes of works, project schedules and milestones, and project outcomes and project energy savings targets/goals.
  • Continually evaluate the effectiveness of the PDE role in the ESPC development process and identify, recommend, and institute improvements.
  • Cultivate and maintain effective internal and external business relationships at all levels and project phases

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Energy efficiency knowledge, including basic energy conservation and facility improvement measure development and energy calculations
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic building HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems and construction industry knowledge and understanding
  • General DDC control systems understanding and application knowledge
  • Ability to audit existing mechanical and building systems and recommend solutions for improvement
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and unsupervised
  • Strong analytical abilities
  • Strong interactive, oral, and written communication skills
  • Well organized, with the ability to multi-task across numerous projects
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position is office-based with the potential for occasional jobsite visits for training purposes. Project jobsites present typical construction and outdoor conditions that require the use of personal protective equipment for safety purposes. Occasional lifting and exerting force up to 20 pounds may be required.

POSITION TYPE AND HOURS

  • Full-time, exempt
  • Typical Monday – Friday working hours with flexibility as needed
  • · Local travel required up to 30% of the time with occasional out-of-state travel

CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Mechanical or Electrical Engineering undergraduate degree (preferred)
  • At least 2 years of relevant practical experience
  • Certified Energy Manager (preferred)
  • Building Mechanical systems experience
  • Professional business to business sales experience
  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident Status Required
