Job Title: Commodities Trader

Job Summary: As a Commodities Trader, you will be responsible for executing trades and managing portfolios within the commodities markets. This role requires expertise in analyzing supply and demand dynamics, price movements, and geopolitical factors influencing commodity prices. You will collaborate closely with research analysts, risk managers, and clients to identify trading opportunities, mitigate risks, and optimize portfolio performance across various commodity sectors.

Roles And Responsibilities

  • Market Analysis and Research:
    • Monitor global commodity markets, including energy (oil, natural gas), metals (gold, silver, copper), agricultural products (grains, livestock), and soft commodities (coffee, cotton).
    • Conduct fundamental analysis, technical analysis, and market research to identify trading opportunities and forecast price movements.
  • Trade Execution and Position Management:
    • Execute trades in commodities markets, including futures, options, and physical commodities, to capitalize on market opportunities and manage portfolio risk.
    • Manage trading positions, optimize entry and exit strategies, and adhere to risk management protocols to maximize profitability and minimize losses.
  • Risk Management and Compliance:
    • Assess and manage market risks, including price volatility, liquidity risk, and geopolitical risk, using hedging strategies and risk mitigation techniques.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, exchange rules, and internal trading policies in all trading activities.
  • Client Relationship Management:
    • Build and maintain relationships with institutional clients, commodity producers, consumers, and market participants.
    • Provide market insights, trading recommendations, and customized solutions to meet client hedging and investment objectives.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Monitor portfolio performance and track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as profitability, Sharpe ratio, and portfolio metrics.
    • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly performance reports for internal stakeholders and external clients, highlighting trading activities and outcomes.
  • Market Strategy and Execution:
    • Develop and implement trading strategies based on market trends, economic indicators, and geopolitical developments affecting commodity markets.
    • Collaborate with research teams, quantitative analysts, and strategists to refine trading strategies and optimize portfolio allocation.
Skills Required

  • Commodities Market Expertise: In-depth knowledge of commodities markets, including supply chains, price drivers, and trading strategies across different commodity sectors.
  • Trading Skills: Proven experience in executing trades in commodities futures, options, and physical markets, utilizing trading platforms and order execution systems.
  • Risk Management: Ability to assess and manage market risks, including price risk, basis risk, and operational risk, using hedging and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Analytical Abilities: Strong quantitative and analytical skills to interpret market data, perform scenario analysis, and make informed trading decisions.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build client relationships, present trading strategies, and collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Decision-Making: Sound judgment and decisiveness in executing trades under market pressure and adapting to changing market conditions.

Education And Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field is typically required.
  • Professional certifications such as CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) or series licenses (e.g., Series 3) may be advantageous.
  • Proven experience as a Commodities Trader, Energy Trader, or similar role within a commodities trading firm, commodity desk of a bank, or energy company, with a track record of successful trading and portfolio management.
