The purpose of this classification is to provide and maintain security, safety, care, and control of inmates, ARCCI facility, and facility equipment. Incumbents in this class are new to the department and are expected to complete required training within required timeframes.

  • Monitors and accounts for the inmates: conducts intake of inmates on arrival; monitors and ensures that all inmates are accounted for and are secured in their cells; conducts walkthroughs and body counts; and monitors the and video surveillance system; check locks, fences; Supervises feeding, recreation and visitation of inmates.
  • Monitors inmate health status: monitors and conducts basic evaluations of health status; involves healthcare professionals as needed; and escorts or transports inmates to medical facilities following doctor or nurse recommendation. Administers medications and first aid and respond to inmates requests for medical attention.
  • Transports inmates to different locations: and transports or escorts inmates to different locations within the facility or to locations outside the facility.
  • Ensures the security and safety of facility staff and visitors: monitors visitor access to facilities and conducts searches for contraband materials; and escorts visitors within the facility.
  • Prepares and maintains logs of daily activities: fills-out inmate count sheets, tattoo logs, key counts, dorm rosters, disciplinary reports, check lists, and other documentation; updates information in computer; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Education:  High school diploma or G.E.D. {Please note: Upon job offer, you will be required to provide proof of education. Be sure to have the appropriate documents readily available.}  
 
Experience:  One (1) year of work experience in any field that shows an ability to maintain steady employment.
 
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Some knowledge of modern corrections practices and procedures and departmental and safety rules and regulations.
  • Some familiarity with the Department of Corrections guidelines and federal, state and local laws pertaining to the incarceration of persons.
  • Proficiency in observing behavior and responding with accuracy and speed, using self-defense techniques and firearms, and interpersonal relations.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Certification:  
  • Possess or have the ability to possess Peace Officer Standards and Training, Basic Correctional Officer Training, CPR and First Aid certifications within the time frame required by this department, which is normally within one year but may be altered
  • Due to required certifications, candidates with felony convictions are ineligible to be hired as a Corrections Officer. 

Licensing:  
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a good driving history.  If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment. ***This position requires driving a county vehicle and requires the incumbent to be at least 21 years of age.***

OTHER:
This position requires staff call up in an emergency situation and some travel from office to other locations.

  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Physical Abilities: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, toxic agents, human bites, explosives, firearms, violence, disease, and pathogenic substances.
