PURPOSE:  The purpose of this position is to manage the accounting and payables functions at Autism Speaks and is responsible for ensuring the annual financial audit, annual 401k audit, and Form 990 are completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position is also responsible for the month-end close and timely issuance of financial statements for senior management and board review.   

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage monthly and annual general ledger close process and calendar.  Ensure a consistent, timely close process and work to identify opportunities to promote efficiencies.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports including organizational balance sheet, income statement and cash flow.
  • Review account analysis and bank reconciliations on a monthly basis to provide timely financial reporting, budgetary comparisons, and management of cash assets (includes closing out all financial records, e.g. general ledger and sub-ledgers, and account analysis).
  • Serve as technical non-profit accounting resource.
  • Manage the preparation of charity watchdog agency, federal, state and local registrations, filings and census reporting
  • Facilitate the external audit financial statement and 401k audit performed by Autism Speaks’ outside auditors; ensure the audit is completed in an accurate and timely manner with an unqualified opinion
  • Preparation of annual Form 990 federal tax return.
  • Manage the preparation and distribution of monthly field reporting.
  • Manage the Accounts Payable process and ensure vendors are paid on a timely basis
  • Manage banking relationships and related account administration.
  • Develop, implement and maintain accounting systems, and procedures and policies to ensure adherence to company policy and guidelines.
  • Make sure that proper internal controls are adhered to and that appropriate accounting procedures are followed in conformity with GAAP.
  • Contribute to department and organization special projects as assigned.
  • Ensure the smooth intersection of Accounting and Accounts Payable functions with those of other operational and financial management areas; such as: human resources, information technology, and facilities
  • Oversee Finance staff including hiring, coaching, training, development, and performance management of staff
  • Provide guidance to staff on the wide range of financial management matters and conduct training as necessary on matters related to budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance or accounting

Experience:   10+ years’ recent, non-profit experience preferred; CPA/MBA preferred

Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced, high volume, internally demanding environment
  • Strong attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Acceptable Accounting Principles (GAAP), budgets and financial statements
  • Proficient in using accounting software and spreadsheets; not-for-profit accounting software experience preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office including Excel, Word, and Outlook, including the use of pivot tables
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral
  • Strong customer service skills for interacting with all levels of management, outside vendors, banks and auditors
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, highly motivated and reliable
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a collaborative, team-oriented organization
