Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Editor to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Cancer Institute (NCI) located in Rockville, MD. 

 

Overall Position Summary and Objectives Independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Cancer Institute. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services.

 

Deliverables:

  • Communications plans, evaluation plans, social media content, website content.
  • Work products and documents related to understanding and conveying program and research information to internal and external stakeholders through appropriate and effective channels; developing ongoing relationships with partners in the NCI/NIH, other federal government entities, industry, and academia.
  • Work products and documents related to writing and editing content for websites, presentations, print materials, blogs, social media, and internal/external announcements; coordinating project deliverables and act as a liaison between federal communications teams, subject matter experts, and others.
  • Work products and documents related to communicating with office leadership on resources associated with execution of communication strategy; contributing to teams assessing outcomes of scientific programs - Weekly

Work Details:

  • Develops communication strategies and plans that align with overall program objectives and goals.
  • Research and write communication strategies and plans that identify goals to be achieved, measurable objectives, audiences, messaging, creative concepts, communication channels, and government clearance requirements.
  • Prepares written and electronic information documents for various audiences.
  • Research and write in appropriate scientific or technical style various communication products, to include press releases, newsletter articles, media releases, fliers, web content and video and podcast scripts.
  • Research and design various visual media to include graphics, artwork, and photographs.
  • Research and write scientific and technical messages, talking points, frequently asked questions and presentations.
  • Conducts media and content analysis.
  • Monitor variety of social media and Internet sites, blogs, discussion boards, and news sites, conduct content analysis and report findings.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of media campaigns through traditional and social media channels, assess results and report findings.
  • Identify key articles, reviews, Internet and social media content and assess relevance and impact to the program.
  • Maintains social media and Internet sites, and updates content and materials.
  • Perform site administration functions related to updating content and design and managing site settings and security protocols.
  • Monitor digital media platform analytics and prepare performance reports.
  • Review visitor feedback and queries submitted through social media and Internet sites and coordinate timely and accurate response.
  • Monitors press coverage through press calls, news alerts, and other sources.
  • Determine ways for the organization to work more closely with media and groups to communicate with audiences interested in or affected by programs. 1
  • Track frequently asked questions at speaking engagements and other events and develop materials to address relevant questions. 2
  • Identify needs and develop content for various communication mediums to increase visibility of the program. 3
  • Builds relationships with the press and maintains specialized contacts.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with members of the press and external stakeholders.
  • Meet with internal and external stakeholders to identify communications gaps and collaboration opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships and engage in two-way dialogue with key stakeholders.
  • Attends workshops, seminars, and meetings to stay abreast of current scientific and policy trends.
  • Plan, execute, and attend national professional conferences and events.
  • Represent the program at meetings and conferences with tribal leaders, organizations, and members, as well as the general public.

  • Identifies new meetings and conferences to promote initiatives within the Program.
  • Plan for conferences and to continuously seek areas of improvement for the program.
  • Identify opportunities for the program leadership to proactively engage with external organizations, including through high-profile speaking opportunities, workshops, leadership meetings, etc.
  • Serve as an expert resource to staff and consortium members about opportunities and challenges for engagement with the program.
  • Coordinate program activities at exhibit booths and provide information and services regarding the program to members of the research community at conferences.
  • Provides communication and media subject matter expertise and coordinates media engagements.
  • Plan for conferences and to continuously seek areas of improvement for the program. 4
  • Serve as an expert resource to staff and consortium members about opportunities and challenges for engagement with the program. 5

Minimum Education

 

Bachelor’s

 

Additional Qualifications:

 

Certifications & Licenses

  • Minimum of three (3) years of related communications experience two years of specialized experience
