Job Description
The Accounting Manager is responsible for all areas relating to financial results reporting. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Accounting Manager supervises a small team of staff accountants and is responsible for managing this team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger reconciliation, financial reporting, capex forecasts, year-end audit support preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities. The Accounting Manager will have contact with senior-level management which requires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal.
- Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure and ERP system as it relates to finance.
- Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close.
- Ensure the timely reporting of all local and parent company monthly financial results.
- Prepares capex forecasts and supports the budget and other forecasting activities.
- Collaborates with the other department managers to support overall department goals and objectives.
- Supervise the general ledger group to ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
- Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
- Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
- Works with the Assistant Controller to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit.
- Work with outside tax consultant to ensure timely filing of state and federal corporate tax returns.
- Oversight of timely filing of all sales tax and tobacco excise tax returns.
- Oversight of all business license renewals including but not limited to smoking exemptions and liquor licenses.
- Responds to inquiries from the Assistant Controller, Controller and CFO regarding financial results, special reporting requests and the like.
Skills and Competencies Required:
- BA/BS in Accounting with an emphasis in Business
- At least 5 years related experience in a management role
- Experience in a multi-entity, multi-state environment within a retail environment (wholesale or e-commerce)
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
- Expert Excel skills
- Advanced aptitude in problem solving and thoughtfulness
- Strong leadership skills with proven ability to lead and manage in an ever-changing environment
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Strong knowledge and experience with GAAP, IFRS, financial accounting and processes
