Responsibilities
MAIN FUNCTION
The Laboratory Support Technician performs specimen collection on adult and pediatric patients including venous, capillary, and blood culture samples. The LST orders laboratory tests in the Laboratory Information System, processes, files requisitions, prepares specimens sent to the reference laboratory for testing and processes test results that were referred to other reference laboratories. The LST will follow all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent, required.
Experience:
- Previous Clinical Laboratory experience, preferred.
- Previous experience with a Laboratory Information System (LIS), preferred.
Skills:
- Required to provide high-quality phlebotomy services for patients in the clinic or laboratory setting.
- Must be able to prioritize work, write clearly, and perform work accurately.
- Strong telephone, written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Strong attention to detail, precision, and commitment to accuracy are essential.
- Ability to build rapport quickly, develop trust, sustain working relationships, and represent Cobleskill Regional Hospital positively with internal and external clients.
- Strong time-management and organizational skills are required.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including but not limited to, Excel, Word, and Power Point.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires extensive standing, occasional sitting and routine walking.
- Ability to perform the following: kneeling, stooping, crouching, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling and repetitive motion.
- Potential exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.\
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
- Position requires extensive close visual work, requiring visual acuity.
- Must be able to position patients for phlebotomy.
- May require the physical ability to push a patient in a wheelchair.
