Battelle is seeking a Internal Audit Manager. The position is located in Columbus, OH.

JOB SUMMARY

Works with the Chief Audit Executive to manage a comprehensive internal audit program for Battelle. Plan, organize, direct, and conduct audit activity by providing independent and objective analyses, appraisals, and recommendations on financial and operating activities; compliance with policies and regulations; safeguarding of assets; and identification of any irregularities, fraud, and other acts that pose significant risks to Battelle.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans and designs financial, operational, and regulatory related internal audits and assessments to evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of processes and controls in mitigating risks. Where potential control gaps and process weaknesses are identified, develops recommended action plans.  
  • Conducts or supervises the performance of audits, reviews the work of audit staff, and oversees the reporting process. Plans and helps manage the activities of external and internal auditors to ensure the efficient use of audit resources.
  • Executes or oversees the execution of special reviews and projects as requested by management and/or the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors, including privileged and confidential legal reviews.
  • Works with the Chief Audit Executive (CAE) in the performance of the annual Risk Assessment and development of the annual Audit Plan.
  • Works with the CAE in the development and management of the annual budget.
  • Develops internal audit staff so they can assume responsible positions in other parts of the organization.
  • Promotes identification and considerations of internal control, government, GAAP, and other regulatory requirements in financial/business decisions.
  • Works with the CAE to ensure the Internal Audit function remains compliant with Institute of Internal Auditors standards and regulations (IPPF), Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), etc. and the Internal Audit Charter.
  • Builds relationships with key stakeholders and leadership across various functions to remain knowledgeable of developments throughout the organization. Uses information learned from these relationships to develop and ensure recommendations and action items resulting from reviews are implemented.
  • Supports the accomplishment of Internal Audit’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Administers Battelle’s Ethics Hotline system, monitoring and tracking all reports ensures reports and investigations are completed, properly documented, and the cases closed out.
  • Performs investigations as assigned by the Investigation Oversight Committee, or oversee investigations performed by other members of the Internal Audit team.
  • Works with the CAE in the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members.
  • Works with all areas of the organization performing the function of a subject matter expert, providing guidance and recommendations in a consulting capacity.
  • Participates in communities of practice with the Internal Audit Directors of the national laboratories managed by Battelle. 
  • Manages or oversees the management of applications and subscriptions used by the Internal Audit function and managed laboratories.

THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; 10 or more years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.  
  • Professional certification such as CPA or CIA designation.  
  • Comprehensive knowledge of auditing practices, procedures and principles sufficient to interpret and analyze complex concepts and apply them in innovative ways. Skills and knowledge must include an extensive understanding of financial, operational, regulatory, and market risk. 
  • Thorough understanding of and familiarity with the concept and practice of self-auditing institutions, as in the COSO framework and control self-assessment approach for the review of reliable financial reporting, operational efficiency and compliance.
  • Possess the capability and desire to evaluate management’s effectiveness and comply with established corporate policies and procedures, including corporate governance, code of conduct standards, and the business ethics and conduct policy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience interacting with and presenting to senior management-level personnel.
  • Must have ability and technical skills to make sound, business-oriented judgments.  
  • Experience developing strategies and methodologies for utilizing data analytics in an audit environment.
  • Department of Defense Secret clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • Strong Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio skills.
     

THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED

  • MBA
  • Possess expert knowledge of generally accepted auditing standards in the US. General understanding of Information Technology / Information Systems risks.
  • Experience in government contracting.
