What are the responsibilities and job description for the Histotechnologist Lead position at Beaumont Health?

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the pathology laboratory supervisor, is responsible for the preparation of laboratory specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist through the use of microtomy, special staining, histochemistry, and other appropriate techniques. Also assumes a senior role in ensuring the histology section is running smoothly in all respects. In the absence of the pathology laboratory supervisor, assumes the role of supervisor for histology. Reports to the Supervisor or Manager of Histology.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Will perform all duties described for the histology technologist.
2. Will assist the pathology supervisor in the planning of schedules and work assignments of the staff within the histology section to ensure an even distribution of the workload and to maintain the skill levels of all staff members.
3. Will ensure that special staining procedures are performed according to established procedure.
4. Will perform troubleshooting procedures, as needed, and will determine when service is required for said instruments and equipment.
5. When handling blood or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
6. Will assist the supervisor in coordinating and monitoring chemical waste disposal in the pathology area. The lead histotechnologist assists the supervisor in the following:
7. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, section/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
8. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
9. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
10. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a section/unit team inter- and intrasectionally to facilitate the section’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
11. Will assist pathology supervisor in maintaining adequate inventory and supplies needed. Will ensure that reagents and supplies are properly stored and used in a timely manner.
12. Will assist supervisor in maintaining the pathology module of the laboratory information system.
13. Performs work of equal skill and responsibility, as directed. May also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility and may be requested to perform work of lesser responsibility when the work load of the section so requires.

A. Education / Training:
· Bachelor’s degree of science in Biology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent and preferred attendance of an accredited NAACLS Histotechnology program.
B. Work Experience:
· Minimum one to three years’ experience as a histology technologist.
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:
· HT/HTL (ASCP).
D. Other Qualifications:
· None.
