What are the responsibilities and job description for the Packaging Lead position at Beer Tree Brew?
Job Brief:
The Packaging Lead at Beer Tree Brew brings a high level of responsibility and dedication to the position, leading our team’s efforts in all packaged product functions (kegging, canning, bottling) at Beer Tree. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating our Alpha Brewing Operations canning line and Fillmore 4B4-4C bottling line, as well as leading the effort to fill kegs for our taprooms and distribution network while maintaining the highest quality and safety standards. This role is an integral part of our core production team.
Duties will include:
- Safe and efficient operation of canning line and bottling line and all ancillary equipment (depalletizer, labeler, date coder etc.)
- Ensure proper handling of beer from tanks to packaged cans, bottles and kegs.
- Record dissolved oxygen levels and carbonate beer in brite tanks to required levels using Anton-Paar Cbox
- Perform dissolved oxygen tests on packaged cans using Anton-Paar Cbox/PFD, keep clear and precise records.
- Investigate variations in dissolved oxygen readings and adjust accordingly.
- Perform teardowns, measure and record seam specs – adjust seamer as needed
- Ensure canning equipment and all hardware are clean and in functioning order - perform maintenance, properly report and document issues as needed.
- Closely monitor packaging materials inventory and communicate when orders should be placed.
- Timely communication when spare parts / misc. supplies are needed.
- Lead pack-out team – communicate clearly and work together to ensure efficiency and safety.
- Follow, edit and create SOPs
- Inspect the quality of packaged product and assure it is fit for our taprooms and distribution network.
- Accurate and timely record keeping including but not limited to QC specs, finished goods counts, low fill counts, and materials waste.
- Seek ways to improve the canning process and minimize losses.
- Keep packaging area clean and organized.
- Clean-In-Place (CIP) canning line according to SOP’s
- Operation of keg washer
- Transferring beer from fermenters to brite tanks
- Clean-In-Place (CIP) fermenters and brite tanks
- Keg filling based on sales and distribution packaging guides
- Effectively communicating across departments and communicating daily with Head Brewer about beers being packaged and scheduling.
- Working in confined spaces, lifting repeatedly, moving up to 165 pounds and climbing ladders repeatedly.
- Working with dangerous chemicals while following Standard Operating Procedures and Policies
- Operating forklifts, pallet jacks and hand trucks
- Assisting head brewer with any potential projects or tasks
Ideal candidate looks something like this (preferred, but not required):
- 2 years experience operating a canning line
- Experience repairing, adjusting, swapping parts and troubleshooting canning line
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Self sufficient yet collaborative with a hands-on attitude and a strong work ethic
- Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
- Must be at least 21 years of age (required)
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Computer skills
Physical demands / Working conditions:
- Frequent lifting: up to 60 lbs.
- Frequent moving: up to 165 lbs.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job such as operating production and packaging equipment, driving a forklift, and operating pallet jacks
- The duties and responsibilities that are generally performed in a brewery environment
- The position generally involves continuous standing, frequent walking, moderate to heavy lifting, moderate to heavy carrying, frequent bending and reaching, frequent climbing of stairs and ladders, and in-person communication
