CHARGE NURSE JOB DESCRIPTION Render skilled technical nursing service to residents on an assigned hall or unit in support of medical care as directed by the attending physician and registered nursing staff, as well as supervise CNAs to ensure that quality care is provided to all residents on that assigned hall or unit. This position is a safety sensitive position as defined by applicable state law. QUALIFICATIONS: o Must be a LPN or a Registered Nurse in good standing and currently licensed by the state. PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS: o Must meet all local health regulations. o Must be able to write in a clear and legible manner. o Must maintain regular attendance. o Skilled at organizing various duties. o Must be flexible and able to handle change easily and professionally. o Must display a willingness to continue to study, learn and implement continuously changing state and federal regulations. o Maintain a positive attitude and be a role model of professionalism and teamwork. o Communicate with residents, families and staff in a professional and tactful manner. o Must be able to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Walking, reaching, bending, lifting, grasping, pushing and pulling, fine hand coordination, ability to hear and respond to pages, ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and directions; ability to communicate with residents, families, personnel, vendors and consultants; ability to distinguish smells, tastes, and temperatures; and ability to remain calm under stress. RESPONSIBILITIES: o Assuring resident safety. o Daily nursing operations of an assigned hall or unit. o Perform nursing services for the comfort and well-being of the residents and in accordance with physician’s orders. o Check assigned residents daily to determine status. o Prepare equipment and assist physicians during rounds, as needed. o Administer prescribed medications in the manner in which they are ordered. o Ensure proper handling and storage of medications and controlled substances. o Observe residents’ reactions to medication and treatment. o Assess, record and report changes in residents’ condition to supervisor and attending physician. o Maintain residents’ medical records by way of documentation, as required applicable law. o Assist in supervising and instructing CNAs, including assignment of daily work involving residents. o Utilize available policies and procedures. o Utilize proper infection control techniques. o Assist with quality assurance functions as needed and requested. o Report accurately to oncoming shift charge nurse regarding change in resident status and follow-up needs. o Provide input for CNA performance evaluations. 11-22-16; Revised 9-25-19 o Advise, counsel and discipline CNAs as needed. o Recommend staffing, equipment and supply needs to DON or designee. o Complete treatment orders following proper infection control practices, as needed. o Assist and complete skin audits as determined by supervisor, as needed. o Be responsible for the safety of residents and employees under his/her supervision. o Identify safety hazards and initiate corrective action. Identify special nursing problems and emergency situations quickly and initiate immediate action. o Communicate problems and needs with the DON or designee. o Provide emergency care to residents when necessary. o Perform basic nursing skills including, but not limited to, direct care. o Participate in facility educational programs, including, but not limited to, orientation, in-service and nursing assistant education. o Participate in interdisciplinary team and rehabilitation meetings as required. o Assess resident needs and provide input for the individualized resident care plan. Review and update resident care plans as necessary and as assigned. o Travel to occasional meetings, conventions and seminars. o These duties and responsibilities are not a comprehensive list, and additional tasks may be assigned from time to time. The scope of this position may change as necessitated by business demands.
