Summary of Position:
Reporting to both, the Superintendent and the Foreperson, the Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of multiple pieces of construction equipment. The Equipment Operator is proficient in the use of a diverse range of construction equipment, including, Excavators, Loaders, Dozers, Rollers, Graders, Pavers, Skid Steers and other pieces of equipment.
- Capable of operating multiple pieces of construction equipment used in construction, base preparation and construction, and paving.
- Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner as well as CHP requirements.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
- Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refill the equipment as necessary.
- Maneuver heavy equipment into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew as needed; check that the vehicle position is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
- Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
- Use various pieces of equipment to perform fine grading and finishing, sloping and banking, backfilling, demolition, ditching, loading, excavating and stockpiling.
- Operate equipment on public roadways, maintaining proper awareness of ones surroundings.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure smooth operation of the equipment.
- Train new employees in the safe and efficient operation of construction equipment.
- Ensure you never overload a dump trunk.
- Responsible for checking with the Foreperson/Superintendent for clear direction when performing a task that is not routine.
- Assist in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.
- Other construction related duties as required.
- Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program and encourage all employees to adopt safety as a culture.
- Participate in daily and weekly safety tailgate meetings.
- Review safe work plans with crew prior to job commencement.
- Work with the Safety Director to investigate damage, incidents, or near misses in the worksite, and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Company’s Safety Program.
- Work in a safe responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself or endanger the wellbeing of others.
- Participate as a vital team member and contribute towards the success of the company.
- Promote a team approach and maintain dialogue with all employees.
- Responsible for ensuring your hard hat, protective eyewear, and safety vest issued to you is worn and with you at every job site.
- Responsible for wearing all protective clothing.
- Responsible for contacting your Foreperson if you are going to be late for work or absent the day prior.
- Ensure you have plenty of water to drink and adhere to the Heat Prevention Policy.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
- Valid Operator License (or certification) as well as Driver License.
- Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience within the construction industry.
- Minimum 2 to 3 years’ experience operating a diverse range of construction equipment is required.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
- Knowledge road construction materials, road construction processes and industry requirements.
- Understanding of computerized controls and electronics.
- Ability to follow established procedures and practices and read instruction, blueprints etc.
- A strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines.
- Very good communication skills.
- A problem-solving ability.
- Very good physical strength and stamina.
- Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
- Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
- Use of personal protection equipment is required.
- Use of appropriate safety equipment is required.
- Overtime as required.
- Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
- Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
- The Operator must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
- Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
- Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
- Pass Pre-employment drug screening and maintain compliance with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Pass Pre-employment physical and medical evaluation.
- Must comply with the company’s Fleet safety Management Policy & Accountability to Safety Code of Safe Practices.
