Human Resources Internship
Objective: The objective of this program is multi-purpose:
- For the Selected Intern: In order to compete in today’s professional environment, students need more than just a college degree. Practical work experience is an indispensable part of the learning process. This program will expose students to a variety of Human Resource functions, allowing the student to customize his/her education to best meet career goals.
- For Berry Companies: We value new perspectives in our efforts to increase both efficiency and processes in all areas of HR. To continually strive towards improvement, we want to keep on top of new trends in the HR educational process, as well as increase our ability to identify great candidates to help impact our business success.
Process: This program will include 10 weeks of hands-on experience in the field of HR, as well as project-based experience identifying and developing real-world solutions for business inefficiencies and challenges. The selected student will engage with numerous departments, and gain hands on experience with issues that face businesses on a regular basis. This is not a “watch and learn” experience, this is an opportunity for a student’s insight, suggestions, and voice to be heard, while they also gain valuable knowledge that no textbook can give.
Experience: The selected intern can expect to gain experience and knowledge from the following Human Resource functions:
- Recruiting
- Onboarding
- Training and Development
- Employee Relations
- Employment Law
- Benefits
- Worker’s Compensation and Safety
- Customer Service
- HR Management
- Employee Retention
- Payroll
Potential projects: Projects assigned during HR internships may include salary surveys, writing job descriptions, researching pertinent pending legislation, assisting with affirmative action projects, assisting in job interviews, writing operational procedures in compliance with federal laws, developing and implementing employee training programs, implementing and conducting training on HRIS systems, efficiency studies on current procedures and processes, and many other opportunities.
What we’re looking for: The successful candidate will possess the drive to succeed, learn, and grow in HR knowledge. This program will be fast paced in order to cover the most content in the time allotted. Candidates should expect to absorb information quickly and be ready to experience any opportunity that arises. As we are a multi-state organization, travel may be included, but is not mandatory. Opportunities will be made available; it will be your responsibility to take us up on them.
What to expect: Each intern will be assigned a mentor, and will have constant access to HR employees for support. In addition to 10 weeks of on-the-job experience, candidates will create a personal development plan, to be presented upon completion, that includes an evaluation of their HR knowledge growth throughout the program, the insight they gained through their daily experiences, and how they plan to apply this experience in the real world.
