What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accountant I position at Bexar County?
Under general supervision, is responsible for routine and moderately complex accounting and analytical work requiring professional knowledge of theory and practice of recording, classifying, examining, and analyzing accounting records and financial transactions. May work independently with minimal supervision.
- Maintains and reconciles monthly, quarterly and annual expenditure reports, invoices, statements, and other records of financial transactions by utilizing a variety of software applications to downloads user reports and extract information
- Processes and audits assigned accounts payable and receivables to ensure billing accuracy and compliance with established agreements, contracts, policies and procedures; analyzes receipts for proper classification of expenses and requests for payments
- Analyzes, verifies and reconciles financial transactions. Identifies discrepancies, and communicates with team members and other offices within Bexar County to correct financial variances
- Prepares requests for payments, modifies purchase orders, schedules payments, and provides expenditure summary reports to management for review
- Determines that all transactions are properly supported, are in accordance with pertinent regulations, and are classified and recorded according to acceptable accounting standards
- Monitors recurring receipts from State, Federal, and local governments to ensure timely recognition of revenue
- Participates in the completion of special studies and projects; assists in the preparation and administration of the department or division budget; assist in researching products, services, vendors, obtaining proposals/bids, and provides supervisor with a report of information researched
- Perform ancillary tasks, related duties and fulfills responsibilities as assigned by managers as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned by management
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or closely related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience in the accounting field
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft products
- Knowledge of commonly accepted accounting practices and procedures
- Skill in problem solving, decision making and maintaining accurate records
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and County employees
- Ability to operate personal computer, peripherals and basic office equipment
- Ability to apply accounting principles and practices to municipal accounting
- Ability to interpret and analyze complex financial documents
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- Must have valid Texas driver’s license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance; or have a self-reliant source of transportation to conduct business on a daily basis
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
