Director of Education

The Director of Education directs and oversees the operation of the Daycare, Evaluation/Outreach Program, Special Educational programs, Nursing Clinic and Cafeteria through the Principals, Clinical Supervisors, Coordinators, and Department Heads. The Director of Education assists in the development, implementation and monitoring of Special Education procedures and programs consistent and compatible with New York State educational requirements for Special Education. The Director of Education plans programs, coordinates curricular resources, and evaluates effectiveness of programs for students with exceptional needs. The Director of Education is responsible for program development and innovation of special methods and approaches; to ensure that students have a full educational opportunity.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Knowledge of New York State education requirements, special education laws and regulations.
• Advanced training and related experience in the education of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
• Specialized in-depth knowledge in preschool disabilities, career vocational development, or, one or more areas of major disabling conditions.
• Knowledge of functional behavior assessments, functional analysis assessments, development of behavioral plans and training and use of emergency behavioral interventions.
• Methods, procedures, policies and activities pertinent to the education, assessment, placement and program development for Special Education students.
• Methods and procedures of supervision and management to oversee departmental functions effectively.
• Principles of organization, planning, development and implementation of responsibilities as they relate to the activities of the Director of Special Education.
• Methods to forecast, plan, develop and monitor departmental budgets.
• Records, reports and documents that must be prepared, processed, and maintained in order to meet District, State and Federal requirements.
• Ability to provide effective support to management at all levels.
• Ability to maintain professional relationships and memberships that assist in providing information necessary to keep current with all NYS educational regulations.
• Ability to lead, guide and advice, as well as being a team member.
• Ability to create a positive environment.
• Communicate effectively, tactfully and persuasively with parents, students and teachers in difficult situations.
• Maintain an effective and positive relationship with district employees, agencies, parents, students and the general public.
• Work with project partners to coordinate outreach to families and community members to extend opportunities for increased school engagement.
• Make decisions based upon information, experience, sound judgment and discretion.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Preferred: 10 years experience in school supervision/administration and Special Education.

Minimum: Master’s degree in Education with at least 5-7 years as a special education teacher, administrator, and/or related service personnel and 5-7 years experience in school administration. Leadership experience in education programs and settings related to special needs of students at K-12 level. Special Education and School District Administration certifications required.

Valid NYS Driver’s License, reliable automobile, registered in New York State with proof of automobile insurance.
