Summary/Objective
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) provides laboratory services to patients in accordance with accepted practices and Departmental and Hospital standards of care. The Medical Laboratory Technician must support the mission of providing Sacred Work to all who enter the doors of Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas.

Performs routine shift start-up, including quality controls and documentation of these controls, performs appropriate shift maintenance of instrumentation. Utilizes specialized knowledge of Laboratory Services principles in performing general duties.

Demonstrates general and specialized knowledge of Laboratory Services principles in the provision of diagnostic services under the supervision of a Medical Technologist, while processing reliable test results to include analysis, calculations and reporting results, utilizing critical skills related to results and the patient’s clinical condition.

Performs all procedures utilizing Standard Precautions to minimize the potential for exposure to infectious processes, disposes of all instrumentation, reagents and patient wastes appropriately to minimize exposure potential, including replacing biohazard containers when the are ¾ full.

Assists in quality assurance by utilizing the online Variance reporting and participates in quality control, performance improvement and proficiency testing activities within the Department.

Maintains high degree of competency in the operation of equipment in the performance of Laboratory Services testing to include trouble-shooting, minor repair and notification to necessary parties.

Notifies physician and/or other members of the health care team of corrected results in a timely manner with appropriate documentation in the computer system, and notifies charge nurse of Critical results in a timely manner with immediate reporting, documenting time, name of person and read back verification in the computer system.
Required Education and Experience
Minimum of two (2) years in an accredited college or one (1) or more years in training in an accredited school for Medical Laboratory Technicians.
Required License/Certifications
National certification through ASCP or eligible for certification.
