What are the responsibilities and job description for the Data Scientist position at Big Lots?
Responsible for activating our customer data through in-depth quantitative analytics, personalization test and learn, and actionable data-driven insights to drive the company’s profitable growth. Partners closely with cross-functional teams in marketing, CRM/loyalty, ecommerce, and merchandising to support their advanced analytics needs and to inform strategic business decisions. Also acts as a subject matter expert in customer data and provides key insights to assist in prioritizing marketing opportunities and support initiatives driving omni-channel customer value and merchandise productivity.
1. Formulates insights and actionable recommendations based on quantitative analytics and qualitative knowledge across customers, products, and industry trends.
2. Analyzes large scale of transactional and customer data in enterprise data warehouse and customer data platform to identify customer purchase triggers, shift in shopping behavior, and growth drivers across all channels.
3. Develops deep understanding of customer shopping journey, customer value, share of wallet, retention and lapsing behaviors to support strategic priorities and initiatives.
4. Develops robust segmentation schemes for customers to optimize marketing campaign targeting and help answer complex business questions.
5. Performs market basket analysis and category purchase sequence deep dives to provide product propensity insights to merchant partners to inform cross sell strategy and growth opportunities.
6. Leads development of personalization tests and measurement methodology across all mediums to drive incremental return on ad spend and customer level incrementality. Measures A/B and multivariant test results, socializes with cross functional partners, and recommends next steps.
7. Analyzes customer-level performance of promotional events across all channels and makes recommendations to drive marketing spend effectiveness and efficiency.
8. Understands and applies statistical and modeling techniques (correlation, regression, clustering, etc.) into analyses of customers, merchandise, and marketing campaigns.
9. Develops dashboards that align with new strategic KPIs to drive higher sales and active customer file growth for the organization.
10. Incorporates new data types and sources into existing data structures for segmentation and advanced analyses.
11. Interprets statistical and analytical results through compelling storytelling and concise presentations to drive insights to action.
12. Effectively communicates complex customer behavior and analytical insights to functional partners and executive team.
Qualification
1. Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems or related quantitative field required. Master’s degree preferred.
2. Two to three years of related experience in customer data and analytics required.
3. Proficiency in SQL and R/Python required.
4. Strong ability to organize, analyze, and interpret complex data using various quantitative analysis techniques required.
5. Working knowledge of data mining and statistical methods (regression, clustering, life-time value, etc.) required.
6. Multi-channel retail experience preferred.
7. Solid communication, presentation, and visualization skills preferred.
8. Ability to thrive and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, complex environment preferred.
