What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sommelier position at Blackberry Mountain?
The Blackberry Sommelier is passionate in regards to cultivating the best guest experience possible through attentive and professional beverage service with the idea that food and wine are inseparable. This person, amongst the team, shares the responsibility of leading and supporting all daily bar and beverage functions for the hotel in their respective restaurant/operations and ensuring a successful, high-quality experience for guests.
Must be available on weekends and holidays. Must have a positive attitude, willingness to learn a complex and extensive beverage program, ability to work in a team, cooperatively on a daily basis, and embody a very strong work ethic.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Serve as a floor sommelier and/or bartender from the start of lunch service through the midday service
- Restock the cellar daily
- Execute beverage service for guests in remote or outdoor venues across Blackberry Mountain 5200 acre property
- Set up and execute daily beverage tastings for guests
- Monitor and support beverage service standards
- Provide a quality beverage experience tailored to guests’ requests and needs through our bar program and wine list
- Complete paperwork to report daily sales, verify transfers of beverage inventory and forecast next day’s service set up needs
- Assist the dining room in any capacity to support as requested
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of cellars and beverage storage areas
- Training the service staff on wines, spirits, and cocktails
- Assist with group wine service and wine tasting events
- Participate in monthly and yearly beverage inventory counts as assigned
Must comply with all company policies and procedures.
Regular and consistent attendance is required to perform the essential functions of this position.
Must be able to work well with other Team Members, Managers, and interact with our guests.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- Four-year degree in culinary arts preferred, not required
- Experience in the hospitality industry required
- Technical school or on the job training of Wine and Spirits preferred, not required
- Strong knowledge of wine & spirits
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to communicate with guests, team members and managers effectively
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS and COMPUTER SKILLS
- Basic knowledge and understanding of math
- Adobe, Excel and Microsoft Word
REASONING ABILITY
- Must be able to exercise judgment and make decisions based on job knowledge and awareness of company goals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to be on feet for an extended period
- Must be able to operate a company vehicle or golf cart safely
