What are the responsibilities and job description for the Partner Engineer, Commerce position at Block?
It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay/Clearpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 47 million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world’s relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible. Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We’ve been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.
The Commerce team is committed to bringing financial freedom to all our customers. Our team is at the core of Cash App’s mission—redefining the world’s relationship with money. We’re making Cash App and Afterpay the most loved way to pay for buyers and sellers by designing commerce and payment services that are more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible.
As a member of Cash’s partner engineering team, you’ll partner with BD and Sales at all stages of the selling and onboarding journey, providing integration solutions advisory, SLA negotiations, product support, integration troubleshooting, certification, and go-live technical support. You’ll serve as partners’ primary technical point-of-contact, ensuring integrations launch on time and deliver exceptional user experiences for Cash App customers. Post-launch, you’ll continue to partner on integration enhancements to improve performance and optimize the experience for Cash App customers. Finally, you’ll champion your partners internally—sharing integration challenges and feature requests—and collaborate with Product and Engineering to improve our suite of products.
This role requires you to wear many hats—across product, engineering, sales, legal/compliance—and switch between them as needed. A successful team member has both the technical depth and communication skills needed to foster trust-based relationships with our most strategic partners. You might be a good fit for this role if you enjoy working with enterprise customers, developing technical proposals, and building strong relationships.
You have:
- ~8 years of professional experience
- Experience working with enterprise customers in a technical capacity (solutions architect, sales engineer, integration engineer, technical account manager)
- Proven ability to translate product functionality between technical and non-technical audiences, as well as the ability to tune communication to the right level of detail per audience
- Outstanding presentation skills, whether impromptu or using presentations and demos
- Proven track record driving complex projects with cross-functional stakeholders from start to finish
- Experience owning ambiguous initiatives in tandem with Product, where customer requirements are not supported by existing functionality
- Can read and understand code; experience with REST APIs
- General payments industry knowledge
- Ability to self-direct and work independently yet also function well in a global, fast-moving team
- Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time
Even better:
- Experience coding (either as a software engineer or personal projects)
- Experience in this role at a payments company
- Experience with distributed work; especially in collaboration with others across countries and time zones
