These opportunities report to the Design Section inside of the Advanced Development Programs business unit. As part of a growing, hardworking, and curious team of design engineers, you’ll be deployed to programs that shape the future of Blue Origin. You will be responsible for developing materials and processes for thermal protection systems (TPS). You will leverage your knowledge and expertise to define materials requirements, execute the development plan, and conduct testing. You will collaborate across functions to transition the developed materials and processes to the TPS product, manufacturing, and sustainment teams. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of reusable launch vehicles. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, or other relevant fields. Recognized subject matter expert in high-temperature metals, their selection, processing, and characterization methods. Demonstrated success in development of material systems from ideation to flight hardware. Ability to travel to support development and testing opportunities at other Blue Origin and vendor sites. Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion. Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum. Desired: Experience working directly with system, design, and analysis engineers. Familiarity with hypersonic, spaceflight, or re-entry operating environments, including material degradation mechanisms and failure modes Familiarity with metallic TPS state-of-the-art and system level design of metallic TPS, including attachment mechanisms, thermal analysis, strain accommodation mechanism, and insulation. Hands-on experience with TPS material manufacturing, inspection, and repair processes. Leadership: mentored employees, owned long-range strategic initiatives, executed special short-term assignments.
