Your Role
The Corporate Financial Accounting and Reporting team is responsible for the financial accounting and reporting for Blue Shield of California and its subsidiaries. The Senior Accountant will report to the Accounting Manager. In this role, you will be required to possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills to quickly identify, analyze and resolve complex accounting issues independently; be receptive to ambiguity and grasp new concepts with ease through the implementation of processes and procedures; take the initiative and be proactive in matters as it pertains to desk procedures; able to prioritize work to meet deadlines; prepare journal entries and account reconciliations independently; digest and apply accounting standards and regulations to prepare financial statements and filings; possess strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to articulate to various levels and business departments across the organization.
Your Work
In this role, you will:
- Perform monthly financial close activities, including preparing consolidated financial statements, journal entries, and account reconciliations
- Reconcile and maintain ledger accounts by ensuring balances are reconciled to supporting documentation, and reconciling variances are researched and resolved
- Prepare and support the preparation of regulatory financial filings
- Support financial audits and queries by compiling financial schedules, documentation and explanations
- Perform trend and fluctuation analyses of the financial statements to investigate significant variances
- Research discrepancies and other complex accounting issues, make corrections and recommend improvements
- Research new accounting standards and state insurance regulations; apply requirements to the preparation of financial statements and filings
- Create, update and improve upon Microsoft Excel workbooks that support regulatory financial filings and internal/external reporting
- Develop, maintain, and update desk-level procedures and process documents
- Other duties as assigned, including partnering with other departments to support various business initiatives
Your Knowledge and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field required
- At least 5 years of experience in a large corporation as an accountant/analyst 3 years in public accounting preferred
- Experience in insurance or healthcare industry preferred
- Able to interpret and apply accounting standards and regulations
- Able to balance multiple priorities to meet deadlines
- Able to work independently and as deliver as part of a team
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel required to create workbooks that are efficient and accurate
- Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Possess strong written and verbal communications skills
- CPA or public accounting experience preferred
- Oracle ERP and SmartView experience preferred
- Flexible, eager, and quick learner
Pay Range: The pay range for this role is $77,990.00 to $116,930.00 for California.
Note: Please note that this range represents the pay range for this and many other positions at Blue Shield that fall into this pay grade. Blue Shield salaries are based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, location (California, Bay area, or outside California), and current employee salaries for similar roles.

Salary : $75,680 - $113,520
