We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Director, Corporate Tax to join our Finance team. This role is located in New York, NY – HYBRID.
The State and Local Tax team within BNY's Corporate Tax Department is looking for a director level candidate to handle all state and local corporate income tax, sales tax, and personal property tax audits. You will have the opportunity to work with a diverse team, interact with state tax auditors, appeals officers and conferees and contribute to resolving audit issues. This role will allow you to leverage your state and local tax experience, enhance your skills in using programs such as Excel and OneSource tax applications, and develop your time and people management skills. We value a self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team, and who possesses excellent communication, organizational, and attention to detail skills.
In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways:
- Serve as point of contact and interact with state tax auditors and participate in field appointments.
- Respond to Information Document Requests (IDRs), notices, and other informal inquiries.
- Review assessments and proposed tax workpapers and maintain electronic records for Corporate Tax.
- Work with other members of Corporate Tax to resolve audit issues.
- Prepare and file protests and tax appeals.
- Develop relationships and communicate with business stakeholders to obtain responsive information to IDRs.
- Communicate issues raised on audit to the Compliance group to be considered for filing positions and to the Tax Accounting group for ASC 740 purposes.
- Collaborate with senior management to ensure that the appropriate corporate tax policies, methods, standards, processes, reporting, and training are developed, applied and understood by impacted stakeholders.
- Broad and comprehensive knowledge of state and local tax laws, processes, and in-depth knowledge of tax support requirements.
- Oversee the management of all activities related to the development, coordination and implementation of the overall state tax audit processes and strategies for state and local taxes.
To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:
- Bachelor‘s Degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Master’s in Taxation, JD, and/or a CPA license is preferred.
- Financial service industry experience is preferred.
- 7 years of state and local tax experience working in Big 4 accounting firm or private industry that encompasses experience with state and local tax audits and compliance.
- The ability to effectively use programs such as OneSource tax applications and strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

BNY assesses market data to ensure a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base salary for this position is expected to be between $125,000 and $231,758 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base salary if hired will be determined on an individualized basis, including as to experience and market location, and is only part of the BNY total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, discretionary bonuses, short and long-term incentive packages, and Company-sponsored benefit programs.
This position is at-will and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, change in geographic location, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
