Job Description
Bolt is looking for a candidate that can bring together critical safety and environmental best practices with common sense facilities management. As part of the Bolt Threads Workplace Operations team, you will have the dual charge of:
- Helping implement risk-based, people-centric, and innovative EHS programs to protect our employees and the environment, while ensuring compliance to applicable laws.
- Ensuring our new Berkeley facility is operational and capable of supporting critical R&D efforts.
The EH&S / Facilities Manager will be supported by our EH&S Professional/Consultant in EH&S compliance and program implementation, in promoting a safe and healthful work environment.
The Position
- Implement EHS programs including: Injury and Illness Prevention Plan; Emergency Action and Fire Prevention Plan; Chemical Hygiene Plan; Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan; Respiratory Protection Plan; Contractor Safety Plan and Waste Management Plan
- Monitor activities for compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements (Cal/OSHA, EPA, RCRA, CUPA, DOT, IATA, BAAQMD)
- Hazardous waste management including oversight of hazardous waste generation, storage and proper disposal with vendor
- Manage chemical inventory and SDS database
- Conduct lab safety orientation for new lab employees and coordinate site safety inspections
- Ensure the proper personal protective equipment is available for lab personnel
- Manage the site spill response team and participate actively in the overall site emergency response programs
- Coordinate and assist in incident investigations, ensure corrective actions are implemented, and maintain Cal/OSHA log
- Manage and coordinate emergency response plan for the site, manage the site emergency spill response team, and conduct annual evacuation drills in coordination with stakeholders
- Conduct initial job hazard assessments and chemical reviews for all new processes and materials
- Support the overall implementation of EHS trainings, ensuring proper documentation and compliance
- Manage and maintain positive relationships with landlords and landlord facilities staff
- Set facility budgets, including maintenance and repairs, and assist in annual forecasting as well as scoping of special projects
- Ensure our facilities meet building codes and other relevant legal requirements while maintaining regulatory and other asset management documentation relating to facilities
- Ensure compliance with building fire prevention, equipment preventive maintenance, contractor safety, and the as timely completion of action items as they pertain to safety and compliance of the facility and equipment
- Negotiate and manage service contract requirements and associated vendors
- Oversee and direct maintenance contractors or employees engaged in equipment installation, facilities equipment repair, and preventive maintenance. Assure optimal functioning of building systems (HVAC, fire/life safety equipment, elevators, etc.)
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, safety or closely related field such as science or engineering (equivalent work experience may be substituted for a degree)
- At least 3 years environmental, health and safety work experience
- 5 years of successful facilities experience, including experience with laboratory facilities
- Experience with a variety of laboratory environments (biological, chemical) and machine/electrical shop environments desired
- DOT, IATA, CHMM, HAZWOPER certifications a plus
- General knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols and procedures as they pertain to chemical safety, labor, industrial hygiene or environmental health standards (CAL-OSHA, CALEPA, EPA, DOT, IATA)
- Experience with EHS management systems including SDS and chemical inventory systems
- Ability to meet deadlines, multi-task efficiently and deal professionally with internal and external customers.
- Collaborative work ethic but can also work autonomously
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to work in an independent and self-directed manner
- Ability to be “on call” to respond to emergency response calls and facilities issues.
- Experience working in high growth companies at the peak of scaling operations
- Strong negotiation and project management skills
- Ability to read construction plans and schematics
- Background in Real estate or construction project management a plus
- Willingness to travel occasionally (1 - 2 weeks per year) and to respond to off-hours emergencies
This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop and perform light lifting and requires ability to regularly lift 10-20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds
Salary : $109,000 - $164,000
