General Summary of Duties: Responsible for obtaining all necessary referrals and/or authorizations from the insurance company. Responsibilities also include pre-certifying all outpatient and inpatient surgeries.
Examples of Duties: (This list may not include all of the job duties)
Answers all calls for referral/authorization requests.
Daily pick up of referral requests from participating offices.
Verifies referral requests form has accurate and complete diagnosis and procedural coding.
Calls insurance companies or utilizes electronic equipment to obtain authorization/referral.
Documenting referral/authorization number in appropriate section of the scheduler system in Nextgen.
Schedules appointment for patient if the referral is for an outside physician.
Files copy of the completed referral form.
Adheres to patient confidentiality protocol.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: High school diploma or GED is required. Graduation from a recognized training facility for medical assistant is preferred.
Experience: Minimum one year experience in a hospital or clinical setting, preferably as a medical assistant or medical receptionist; or one year experience as an appointment screener. Computer experience is required.
