This position is primarily responsible project and other special activities dealing with supplier quality for an individual major Hyster-Yale assembly plant. In addition, they will be called on to support both the component plants as needed and suppliers that are located in their local region yet supply other major assembly plants around the world (liaison role). There are two major objectives associated with the position:
What you will do:
- Lead the implementation of the development, execution and ongoing evolvement of the respective assembly plant’s supplier quality management function. The supply base would include all production parts and materials suppliers for all company product line segments (i.e., Big Trucks, Counterbalance, and Warehouse Products) produced at the assigned Hyster-Yale plant location. Major activities include:
- Main line of contact (and often the main responsibility) for resolving major supplier related quality problems discovered at the assembly plant or in the field.
- Evaluation of potential new suppliers’ quality performance capability ie-- Quality Management System Documentation, Process Capability, Reliability Planning, Incoming Parts Quality System, etc.
- Support link between suppliers and Development Engineering to ensure parts designs are optimized for manufacture. Link should occur as early as components/concepts are being evaluated in “mule” trucks and no later than prototype development stage.
- Help ensure suppliers meet Hyster-Yale production readiness requirements for new model introduction. Minimum “readiness” requirements for all suppliers and additional requirements for “focus” suppliers will need to be defined as part of the process.
- Manage the ASE (Annual Supplier Expectations) process for supplier quality – ie. establish Q targets, ensure accurate performance measurement, monitor monthly supplier performance, proactively assist poor performing suppliers as required.
- Institute Q problem solving expectations and methodology to supply base and enforce compliance.
- Ensuring supplier manufacturing process capability and control for select focus suppliers.
- Be an active participant in the cross functional warranty resolution activity within Hyster -Yale and aggressively pursue corrective actions to identified issues, and track and report progress.
- Interface with peer QE’s around the world to share “lessons learned” and ensure standardization of global practices.
Successful achievement of the above activities and objectives will provide the individual assembly plant that the QE is assigned to with a sustainable competitive advantage through the combination of improved delivered parts quality and smooth new model introductions.
Who you are:
- Position incumbent must be capable of working in a highly matrixed environment where several areas within the assigned assembly plant are responsible for Hyster-Yale product quality. Position must successfully motivate and influence peers in other functional areas to cooperatively participate in new supplier quality concepts and processes. Incumbent must be an effective communicator and presenter with internal and external company executives.
- Interfacing and coordinating closely with related functional departments that have significant responsibility for the quality of Hyster -Yale products, such as Service Engineering, Plant QC and Development Engineering, to ensure Hyster-Yale maximizes the quality performance of its supply base.
- Able to manage 20-40 numbers of parts to support truck upgrades or minor model truck changes.
What you will need:
- B.S. degree in Software, Computer, or Electrical Engineering
- Technical Education (BS degree) and/or Significant Product and Component experience (2-5 years). Certification (via ASQ – American Society for Quality or another similar certification) is also desirable.
- Significant Industry and OTJ experience (2-5 years)
- Formal Education, Seminars, and OTJ experience
- Broad Manufacturing Industry, Product, and Supplier knowledge
- Broad Technical understanding of either major lift truck systems and components or similar complex part assemblies from another manufacturing industry
- Extensive “on the shop floor” experience in problem solving activity with both suppliers and related internal departments
- Broad Communication, Presentation and Motivation skills
- Oral, Visual, and Written
- PC Application skills
Skills, Experience & Abilities
- Highly self-motivated individual with the ability, interpersonal and facilitation skills to work across functional team boundaries
- Basic specialized knowledge/skill in drawing practices, CAD, engineering analysis, design layouts.
- Basic knowledge/skill in vehicle/automotive technology, manufacturing technology, design/test experience, test practices and procedures.
- Proficient demonstration of the core competencies for this position as defined in the Hyster-Yale Competency Dictionary.
- Extensive “on the shop floor” experience in problem solving activity with both suppliers and related internal departments
- Maturity and Professionalism to effectively interface with Supplier Senior Management in order to improve performance
