Boulder County's Office of Sustainability, Climate Action & Resilience (OSCAR) is seeking to a Climate Communications Fellow to develop high-quality social and visual media content. This dynamic role involves creating and disseminating multimedia content that educates and engages the community about the county’s climate action initiatives.
The Climate Communications Fellow will assist OSCAR's Climate Communications Specialist in developing, producing, and delivering engaging content across multiple platforms, including social media, web, and print. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated understanding of a wide range of climate and/or sustainability topics, as well as a proven track record of integrating concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion into their work. Additionally, the candidate should have professional experience creating high-quality content in at least two of the following areas: social media, copywriting, graphic design, illustration, photography, or videography.
This is a hourly, non-benefited position, that will work 20-25 hours per week between the hours of Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm. This position will work hybrid out of 1325 Pearl St, Boulder, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
Hiring Salary Range: $25.00- $27.00 Hourly

- Strategically develop, produce, and oversee the distribution of content across major platforms such as X (Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube
- Create social- and web-optimized graphic designs
- Independently manage complete photo and video projects, from concept to delivery, to enhance impact across digital channels
- Attend and create media around project site visits and events put on or endorsed by OSCAR (Office of Sustainability, Climate Action & Resilience)
- Edit photos and videos to maximize engagement, with platform-specific adjustments for social media, web, and print mediums
- Develop and deliver compelling copy that adheres to AP style guidelines across various platforms, aimed at engaging diverse audiences and effectively amplifying key messages
- Conduct targeted research and create concise briefs as needed, offering strategic insights to inform managerial decisions and overarching communications strategies on various topics — including decarbonization, nature-based solutions, renewable energy, and carbon-dioxide removal — while also integrating an understanding of best practices around design principles, behavioral science, demographic analysis, and current scientific, technological, and pop culture trends
- Publish basic web updates using WordPress, as needed
- Performs related work, as required
- May be reassigned during emergency situations
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of two years of demonstrated professional experience in two or more of the following areas: film, video, social media management, photography, graphic design, copywriting or in a related field. Additional related education may count towards required experience.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A portfolio that showcases high-quality photography, graphic design, video production, and/or social media storytelling
- Experience in professional copywriting
- A robust understanding and experience communicating around various sustainability, climate action, science, and/or popular culture topics
- Experience using Sony alpha series cameras for both photography and videography
- Excellent interpersonal written and oral communication skills
- Project completion skills and attention to detail
- Ability and the desire to be a strong collaborator and cultural broker in the community
- Must be a team player
- Skill in graphic design and social media management
- Skill in photography and photo editing
