Overview
Chief Engineer (EPA-203-19586):
Bowhead seeks to network with a Chief Engineer for an upcoming effort supporting the The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO). If awarded, we will support this program by operating and maintaining a research vessel and work boat to obtain sediment and water samples in the Great Lake basin in support of water quality monitoring agreements between the United States and Canada.
Responsibilities
The Chief Engineer shall be responsible for operating and monitoring all machinery and engineering equipment; overseeing the upkeep and cleanliness of all engineering spaces and be responsible for maintaining an engine room watch at all times when the vessel is underway. The Chief Engineer shall maintain a log of fuel consumption and fuel requirements, and vessel maintenance actions accomplished by the contractor’s personnel. The Chief Engineer shall also maintain a daily engineering log and an inventory government furnished parts and equipment used to maintain the vessel. The Chief Engineer shall log all maintenance tasks into a ship management software application.
Qualifications
- The minimum licensing requirement for the Chief Engineer is a valid USCG license of Chief Engineer with an endorsement issued in the grades of chief engineer (limited) of steam, motor, and/or gas turbine-propelled vessels to serve within any propulsion power limitations on vessels of unlimited tonnage on inland waters and of less than 500 GRT in ocean, near-coastal, or Great Lakes service in accordance with 46 CFR § 11.501.
- The Chief Engineer shall have at least five (5) years of experience with routine operation, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and repairs of shipboard systems including, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic systems, propulsion and electrical generator alarms.
- The Chief Engineer shall have an understanding of and be responsible for all electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment on board. The Chief Engineer shall have experience in maintaining routine and preventive maintenance system documentation.
- Prior Military experience is a plus.
- Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts
- Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds
- Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
- Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: There are currently no Security Clearance requirements for this position; however, candidates must be able to successfully pass a background check. Due to the location of this work, US Citizenship is required. Bowhead reserves the right to change this requirement if necessitated by business needs or contractual obligations.
