Position Summary: The Laundry Aide position will take direction from the Director of Laundry Operations to facilitate the processing of linen to meet the needs of the facility. Perform work duties in accordance with company policies, federal and state laws, local standards and guidelines, OSHA, and other applicable regulations. Attend all company designated training as required by manager.


Essential Functions:

1. Collecting soiled linen.

2. Sorting soiled linen.

3. Loading and unloading washing machines.

4. Loading and unloading dryers.

5. Folding and hanging clean linens.

6. Storing and delivering clean linens in specific amounts determined by the Director.

7. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with co-workers, facility administration, and LUCENT management.

8. Maintain supplies and materials in the laundry area in sufficient quantities.

9. Notify Director of Laundry Operations when supplies and materials run low.

10. Perform daily inspections of the laundry facility and report any damage or defective equipment to the Director of Laundry Operations.

11.Keep the facility’s laundry areas clean and sanitized.

12. Attend employee meetings and mandatory in-service training as required by the Director of Laundry Operations.

13. Perform duties and responsibilities to the standard set by the individual facility and LUCENT upper management.

14. Work with minimal supervision on a daily basis.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • The ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • The ability to understand and speak English is essential.
  • The ability to prioritize work assignments in order to complete daily tasks to a satisfactory level.
  • The ability to bend and sort soiled linen a minimum of 2 hours per day.
  • The ability to walk for extended periods of time, climb stairs and push and pull up to 50 lb. linen hampers and equipment as needed, including into and out of elevators.
  • The ability to lift 20 to 30 lb. bags of soiled linen to a washing machine for loading a minimum of 25 times per day.
  • The ability to lift 10 to 15 lb. buckets of water from floor to sink up to 25 times per day.
  • The ability to bend at the knees, waist, and neck, reach to place and remove items from shelves, and carry as much as 10 lbs. as far as 150 feet.
  • The ability to handle and mix various chemicals safely and properly.
  • Must be able to understand and follow basic infection control procedures and safety precautions.
  • The ability to move and replace 15 gallon pails of liquid weighing up to 100 pounds, using the appropriate carts or dollies as many as 5 times per week.
  • Must be able to respond to an overhead verbal paging system and respond in an appropriate manner.
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision on a daily basis.
  • The ability to operate equipment necessary to complete required job responsibilities.
  • The ability to work computer operated washers and dryers.
  • Must be able to deal with residents and their family members in their rooms, regarding the work performed by the Laundry Department.
  • The ability to recognize and report any maintenance issues promptly and in the appropriate manner.
  • Must be able to deal with staff, residents, and visitors of the facility in a pleasant and professional manner.
  • Perform all duties associated with the position as required by the Director of Laundry Operations.
  • Basic mechanical ability is a plus

Education & Experience:

  • The ability to read, write, and speak English is essential.
  • No formal education is required. A high-school diploma is desirable. Some college is helpful.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare facility, specifically the laundry department is helpful, but on-site training and orientation will be provided.
  • The ability to provide and follow oral, written, and verbal instructions is vital.
  • The ability to work in a healthcare environment and conduct themselves professionally and appropriately as required.
  • The ability to fulfill any and all pre-employment requirements as deemed necessary by the individual facility and LUCENT.

Physical & Mental Requirements: The Laundry Aide in a LUCENT run facility spends the majority of their day standing, walking, bending, and lifting. He/she works in a clean, well-lighted, well ventilated and sanitary environment. The LUCENT laundry worker must be able to interact with, and work efficiently with, other members of the facility staff. He/she must be careful, safety conscious, and efficient in all duties performed. He/she must possess the mental and physical qualifications to work in a healthcare environment and be able to work under strict guidelines and time standards.Incumbent is expected to watch and read gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly. The employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. without mechanical assistance. In addition, employee must have had a Mantoux test within the last year and a current Hepatitis B vaccination. Both will be provided by LUCENT if not obtained previously.


Work Environment & Equipment Used: While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed to hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, dirt, dust, vibration and water. The noise level in the work environment is usually above the norm. The employee frequently interacts with residents, family members, and other personnel. The employee may be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, and various medical conditions, including HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis B. Employee will operate state of the art laundry equipment.
