The reading specialist will work with students to improve specific reading skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills. The reading specialist will provide leadership, coordination, collaboration, and innovation in reading instruction. As a Teaching Academy, all teachers will be expected to contribute to a vibrant professional learning community, to reflect on and improve their own practice and to mentor, train, and develop resident teachers.About Dudley St. SchoolDudley Street Neighborhood Charter School operates within the Boston Public Schools as a Horace Mann in-district charter school. We opened our doors in 2012, and now serve over 300 students in grades PreK-5. Founded by the Boston Plan for Excellence (BPE) and the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI), we work with local partners to ensure all children in the Dudley neighborhood have access to a high-quality education. Dudley Street School is a BPE Teaching Academy, part of a PreK-12 neighborhood school pathway that includes Dearborn STEM Academy (G6-12). Modeled after teaching hospitals, teaching academies serve as training sites for aspiring teachers participating in the Boston Teacher Residency program. All staff at Dudley Street School work collaboratively to enact ambitious teaching and learning in service of student achievement goals.Dudley Street School Instructional Practices. Our teachers:

  • Maintain a consistent focus on student reasoning.
  • Assess students understanding every day to inform instructional decisions.
  • Ensure students read and write in all content areas in meaningful ways, on a regular basis.
  • Integrate and connect language, instructional strategies, classroom routines, structures, and academic expectations to our essential habits of mind: perseverance, problem solving, independence, creativity, collaboration, and self-determination.

Key Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct reading intervention and instruction for students who are below grade level benchmarks
  • Supports small literacy group models within classrooms
  • Provides literacy assessments and ongoing data analysis
  • Helps teachers interpret literacy assessment data of students
  • Assists administrators and teachers in designing appropriate intervention programs for students at risk of reading failure
  • In collaboration with classroom teachers and administration, uses assessment data to identify students who are not making adequate progress and are in need of intervention and subsequent progress monitoring.
  • Provides reading instruction and intervention for children who are identified for additional support and services (including special education services as needed), and conducts progress monitoring.
  • Supports the selection and use of appropriate programs, materials, and technology for reading instruction.
  • Serves as a resource for classroom teachers in terms of administering assessment, selecting reading materials, and planning instruction.
  • Communicates with parents/guardians about the progress of individual students.
  • Attends and participates in regularly scheduled meetings throughout the school year for literacy/ language arts teachers from across the district.
  • Such other responsibilities may from time to time be assigned by the principal.

Qualifications

  • Deep belief in the Dudley St School mission and vision.
  • A valid MA teaching license in the relevant content area required; additional licensure in special education and/or ESL strongly preferred
  • SEI endorsement
  • Ability to collaborate with a team of teachers and residents to meet a wide range of student skill, ability, and developmental levels in mixed-grade setting
  • Committed to using data and evidence to inform planning and instructional strategies
  • Strong instructional skills; demonstrated mastery of and enthusiasm for subject matter
  • Enthusiastic to reflect and grow (and help others to do the same) via coaching and feedback
  • Education: Hold a Bachelor's degree
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
