School Liaison Job Description:
Bridge Refugee Services is hiring a School Liaison for the Knoxville Office. The School Liaison works with refugee families to educate them on the American education system and set students on the path to success in school. The Liaison will provide all newly-arriving parents and students with a school orientation informing them of their rights and responsibilities in the US school system and provide case management services when needed. Interventions will include facilitating meetings between teachers and students, advocating for students with disabilities, and helping refugee students obtain tutoring and after school services if requested. Additionally, the School Liaison will network with the local school system to set up trainings for teachers and staff on working with refugee students. This position works primarily under the Refugee School Impact Grant, which is supported through the Tennessee Office of Refugees. This is a full-time position with benefits.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Education, Communications, Social Work, or a related field. The School Liaison must have their own transportation and be able to pass a background check. This position requires excellent communication and outreach skills as well as the ability to work well with diverse populations. Previous work with diverse student populations and previous K-12 teaching experience is highly desired.
Essential Tasks:
- Facilitate orientations for both students and parents on the American education system
- Assist school aged children to enroll in school within 30 days after their arrival in the USA
- Regularly update case notes on services provided to students and parents
- Ensure that refugee children meet local school enrollment requirements
- Facilitate communication between parents and schools when needed
- Work with students and schools to resolve behavioral and educational challenges
- Train local teachers and staff on best practices working with refugee children
- Advocate for refugee students to receive the services and resources they need
- Connect refugee students to community resources (clubs, youth retreats, etc)
- Connect refugee students to local after school programs and summer camp activities and participate when able
- Ensure that parents know how to interact with teachers of their children and navigate the public transportation to attend planned meetings at school
- Report to supervisors about any discrimination against refugee students
- Coordinate special projects related to meeting the needs of families with school aged children
- Act as a liaison with the Tennessee Office of Refugees for Bridge – Knoxville’s Refugee School Impact program
