What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at Brigham Young University?
The Custodial ¾ Time Supervisor is personally responsible for cleaning the building or area assigned and supporting area related events. They inspect the work levels and effectiveness (mentoring) of student employment daily and are responsible for teaching positive work ethics by working side by side with them. They also follow all training, safety and university policies and procedures. They maintain quality customer relations and are a positive example of university citizenship.
They are responsible for following the direction of the Area Manager and Building Manager. They are expected to support and contribute to department-wide activities, policies and programs.
This specific custodial supervisor position is to work in the Harold B. Lee Library with a shift of 5am-10:30am Monday-Friday.
Essential Functions:
1. Responsible for the cleanliness of assigned work area through organizing and supervising part-time employees using approved cleaning methods and techniques.
a. Mentors, teaches, trains, and motivates, part-time employees while instilling in them a service attitude through being an example of positive work ethic.
b. Responsible for personally working with student crews during their work shift to assist with problems, answer questions, direct cleaning and teach positive work ethics by working alongside student employees.
c. Maintains and updates records as assigned.
d. Communicates and provides public relations for the buildings they service.
2. Inspects buildings daily to check effectiveness of cleaning crews and to determine future needs. Contacts building users on as needed to determine customer satisfaction and to assist them with any concerns or problems they have.
3. Maintain complete and accurate records as assigned.
4. Improves job and leadership skills through personal development training and involvement with departmental activities.
5. Follows department and university policies and procedures, supports their supervisor's directions, attends department functions and safety meetings, and is an excellent example of department, university and church citizenship.
Preferred Education: High school diploma or GED Equivalent
Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:
1. Understands and practice principles of good supervision including motivation, assigning work areas and responsibilities, performance evaluations, attendance and documentation.
2. Knowledge of basic computer skills.
3. Attends Monthly Safety meetings.
4. Public relations and customer service
5. Basic Computer Skills, Excellent PR Skills (Preferred)
