Description
Buffalo Hearing & Speech has an exciting opportunity for a Teacher of the Deaf to join our Oral Deaf Education Program! This will be a part time teaching position scheduled to work between 24-30 hours/week working with Early Intervention students and families. The specific schedule has not been finalized, but will most likely consist of 4 morning and 2 afternoon sessions.
Our Oral Deaf Education Program utitlizes the Listening and Spoken Language approach teaching children who are deaf and hard of hearing to become proficient in spoken language and to use it as their primary means of communication. The Teacher of the Deaf will work closely with members of the multidisciplinary team in developing and implementing goals for each child’s IFSP or IEP goals.
Job Summary: Teacher of the Deaf is responsible for designing and implementing developmentally appropriate lessons for children with hearing loss utilizing the family’s choice of communication modality.
Job Duties:
Implement appropriate therapeutic program designed to facilitate improved cognitive, communication, social-emotional, and fine/gross motor skills.
Responsible for implementing site specific curriculum utilizing the family’s choice of communication approach.
Responsible for assisting other team members in planning to encourage the best auditory and learning environment, independence, and generalization of skills.
Participate in IFSP, CPSE, and CSE meetings along with the design and implementation of goals and objectives toward development of age-appropriate skills for each child.
Maintain contact with parents or guardians regarding their child’s progress.
Evaluate each child in each area of skill development using formal and informal measures upon entrance into program and provides updates on a quarterly basis, including compiling comprehensive reports regarding children’s strengths and areas of need

Responsible, with other team members, for children’s supervision and safety.
Submits highest quality written reports in a timely manner in accordance with compliance standards including, but not limited to, evaluation reports, treatment plans, log notes, progress reports, and discharge summaries as required by site or assignment.
Maintains patient records in accordance to compliance standards set by site or assignments.
Maintains appropriate certification(s) and continuing education records as required by New York State Education Department (NYSED); Completes appropriate in-services/requirements in accordance to compliance standards set by site or assignments.
Required Education:
Bachelors or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university as a Teacher of the Deaf.
Required License/Registration/ Certification: Current NYS Teaching certification as a Teacher of the Deaf
Physical Requirements:
Physical actions may include, but are not limited to; bending, kneeling, standing, squatting, reaching, printing, crawling, and running.
Vision, speech, tactical and hearing senses adequate to perform job requirements.
Frequent sitting/ standing and when appropriate, floor sitting with pediatric patients.
