Qualifications:

Qualification Requirement Using Specialized Experience: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade.

To qualify at GS-12: I qualify for the GS-12 because I meet the Basic Requirements AND I have one year of specialized wildland fire management experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level is defined as performing the examples of experience in a key fire management position where regular and reoccurring assistance in planning developing, implementing, coordinating and evaluation of an integrated fire management program is required. In addition to fire management program, appropriate experience must have included either prescribed fire/fuels management--OR--fire management operations as described below:

- Prescribed fire/fuels management - experience in a broad range of activities such as: Inventory methods and procedures; Fuel treatment methods and programming; Land use planning and environmental coordination; or Evaluating prescribed burn plans or fire management plans to ensure containment is possible and identify contingencies if containment is not obtained.

- Fire management operations - analyzing and applying fire management strategies, plus experience in at least five of the following activities: Mobilization and dispatch coordination; Fire prevention and education; Training; Logistics; Equipment development and deployment; Fire communication systems; Suppression and preparedness; and/or Aviation;

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. 

90 Day Prior Firefighting Experience Requirement (resume must support):

The Department of the Interior defines wildland firefighting experience as; on-the-line wildland firefighting experience gained through containment, control, suppression, or use of wildland fire.

This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector fire position for no less than 90 days. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited, as long as the total amount of this experience equates to at least 90 days.

Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Two distinct types of wildland fire have been defined and include wildfire and prescribed fire:

Wildfire - An unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires.

Prescribed Fire – Planned ignitions. This description includes only fire line experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience. You must possess the following requirements in order to be considered for the position.

1) Division Supervisor (DIVS) AND 

2) Incident Commander, Type 3(ICT3) or Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2)

Have completed the following NWCG Course: M-581 "Fire Program Management

3.) Air Services Group Supervisor (ASGS) AND Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3)

Have completed the following NWCG Course: M-581 "Fire Program Management

Responsibilities:

This position serves as an Assistant Fire Management Officer (AFMO) over a multi-layered organization. The incumbent serves as a senior technical expert in fire and aviation management, providing professional knowledge of resource and ecosystem management, and possesses extensive knowledge and experience in all levels of fire suppression, prescribed fire, and aviation management. The employee must remain abreast of the latest scientific, technological advances in the fire sciences and be ready to apply them to the latest issues, both within the bureau and in interagency workgroups. This position is at the full performance level.

Physical Demands: The work is normally sedentary but often requires long hours of varied shifts during fire emergencies. Occasional field assignments may include long periods of standing or walking over rough terrain.

Work Environment: Most work is performed in an office setting. Field assignments include work at fire locations with exposure to smoke and inclement weather. Work may require frequent flying in small fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
