We are currently seeking a Senior Technical Writer to join our Rail & Transit team in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Railroad & Transit Team
Burns provides design and construction solutions to help maintain, improve, and expand the nation’s railroad and transit infrastructure. We have designed the implementation of critical programs across the country and support the renewed emphasis on a public transit-oriented lifestyle.
Summary:
Under direct supervision of the project manager, and with the cooperation and guidance of other ranking technical staff, generate and update engineering documentation for railroad and public mass transit applications. Additional responsibilities include configuration management of both project and technical documentation and support for technical staff in usage of Microsoft tools.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Generation of engineering documentation, based on input from the engineering staff, including, but not limited to, process documents, technical documents (design and whitepapers as needed), manuals, and testing documents.
- Support in generation of engineering presentations, requirements documentation, and reports.
- Lead the configuration management, and lifecycle management, activities relative to document management.
- Organize, file, and retrieve information from digital repositories.
- Editing and proofreading of engineering documents prior to being submitted.
- Generation of group and project level templates to optimize future deliverables.
- Performs work in the timeframe and budget allotted.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university accredited program.
- 10 years’ work history. Must have at least 5 years prior experience with focus on technical writing/publications, must have at least 2 years’ experience with document control.
- Railroad and/or public mass transit industry is considered a plus.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
- None
Language Skills:
College-level English (Excellent level of written and spoken English). Ability to “translate” engineering to common language. Comprehend and apply general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations composed in English. Author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Present information and respond to questions from groups peers, managers, and clients.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to elicit information from engineers for the purpose of illustrating and describing the information clearly in technical publications. Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the following knowledge/understanding:
- Expert level usage of Microsoft Word and PDF publishing software.
- Proficient with other common Microsoft Windows Office applications (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
- Microsoft Visio and Bluebeam experience is considered a plus.
