What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Burns Dirt Construction Inc?
The Controller will oversee the financial operations of Burns Dirt, Burns Waste, and Burns Logistics. This role is critical in maintaining the financial health of these divisions by managing accounting functions, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The Controller will work closely with the CEO and under the advisement of the Fractional CFO, finance team, and operational managers to support strategic decision making and drive financial performance.
Responsibilities
Financial Management:
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, and financial reporting.
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and company policies.
- Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard company assets.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Lead the annual budgeting process and provide regular forecasts in collaboration with the Fractional CFO.
- Monitor budget performance and analyze variances.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business planning and strategy.
Cost Control:
- Manage cost accounting and ensure accurate job costing for Burns Dirt, Burns Waste, and Burns Logistics.
- Identify cost saving opportunities and implement strategies to improve financial efficiency.
Cash Flow Management:
- Using a deferred revenue strategy, monitor cash flow and ensure adequate liquidity for operations.
- Manage banking relationships and optimize financing options.
Compliance and Audit:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations.
- Coordinate and oversee external audits and tax preparations.
- Maintain current knowledge of accounting standards and regulations.
- Team Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor the finance team, including AP/AR personnel and payroll staff.
- Foster a collaborative and high performance work environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or CMA certification preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Experience in construction, logistics, or waste management industries is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems. Experience with HCSS HeavyBid, HCSS HeavyJob, and Spectrum is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
